The Pathfinder • Lennart Georg Meri (29 March 1929 – 14 March 2006) was a writer, film director, the Minister of Foreign Affairs and statesman who served as the second President of Estonia from 1992 to 2001. • Meri was a leader of the Estonian independence movement. • Lennart Meri was chosen the European of the Year in 1998 by French newspaper La Vie.

  3. Early Life • Meri was born in Tallinn, a son of the Estonian diplomat Georg Meri and Estonian Swedish mother Alice-Brigitta Engmann. • In 1941, the Meri family was deported to Siberia along with thousands of other Estonians. • The family survived and found their way back to Estonia.

  4. The Pathfinder • Lennart Meri was married twice. • He had three children. • The 80th of the birth of Lennart Meri was celebrated by the publication of the speeches and by tributes from many former colleagues in Lennart Meri, The Pathfinder.
