War On Terror. Festus Turlington. 9/11 Terror Attacks. On the morning of September 11, 2001, four hijacked planes were aimed at prominent United States land marks. Most notably, the terrorist crashed in to the World Trade Center and caused complete mayhem in New York.

Most notably, the terrorist crashed in to the World Trade Center and caused complete mayhem in New York. • Americans were shocked and scared, and recently thereafter Bush declared war on world terrorism. • Osama bin Laden (Al Qaeda) were the main targets (Afghanistan)
George W. Bush • 43rd president of the United States (2001-2009) • Reorganized the Federal government after the terrorist attacks. • Department of Homeland Security • Liberated more than 50 million citizens from tyrannical rule (Iraq, Afghanistan) • Not attacked again for seven years

Afghanistan • War in Afghanistan started in October 2001 • Not on the country, but al-Qaeda and Taliban targets • Air strikes • Ground offensive (Allied forces with northern alliance) • Drove the Taliban out of northern part of country to Pakistan
Osama bin Laden • Founded Al Qaeda in 1988 • Opposed a growing US presence in the Middle East following the Gulf War. • Thought he could win a war against US • Killed by Navy Seals on May 2
War in Iraq • Allegedly possessed unsanctioned WMDs which threatened peoples safety and freedom • March 2003, Bush invades Iraq • President Saddam Hussian was a radical leader with radical ambitions • Ruthless dictator from 1979-2003
Obama Administration • No longer “War on Terror”, but “Overseas Contingency Operation” • He does what he has to do presently, but he is slowly attempting to wind down US involvement in Middle East. • Ordered the raid to neutralize Osama bin Laden and Al-Qaeda • Plans to pull all American troops out of Iraq by 2012
War on Terror Havoc • 900,000 deaths are accounted for in the War in Iraq. • 4,500 US troops • 1,100 US troops killed in Afghanistan • Necessary Evil • Controversy caused
