CONFLICT BEGINS -Mexico claimed the Nueces R. the boundary between the US and Mexico. -General Zachary Taylor marched his soldiers to the Nueces and Rio Grande. -On April 24, Mexican soldiers attacked a small force of Taylor’s soldiers. -Mexico had shed American blood upon our soil. -Polk declares War on May 11, 1846. .

  3. ATTITUDES TOWARD THE WAR,FOR OR AGAINST?

  4. Naval Intervention -July 1846, The U.S navy captured the ports of Monterey and San Francisco. -1846,John Sloat declared California annexed to the U.S. - The American flag took the place of the bear flag. -By January 1847,California was fully controlled by U.S.

  5. Polk’s three part war plan Part 1-American troops drove Mexican forces out of the border, securing it. Part 2-the U.S would seize New Mexico and California. Part 3- American forces would seize Mexico city.

  6. California and bear flag republic - June 1846, small group of Americans seized Sonoma. • Then they proclaimed the independent republic of California. • They called the country the bear flag republic.

  7. The capture of Mexico City -The Americans met there first two goals in the war. -President Polk, launched the third part of his war plan. -The war cost Mexico half of its territory

  8. The Peace Treaty -Feb.1848, treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo was signed. -In the treaty Mexico agreed to the Rio Grande as Texas/Mexico border. -1853,US pays Mexico $10million for the Gadsden purchase.
