  3. 1 2 3 4 When summarizing a journal article the goal(s) should be: To provide the “gist” of the journal article. To overview the work in your own words and not the author’s. To cover the main points of the article that are pertinent to your work. Significantly shorter than the original.  A B C D

  4. 1 2 3 4 You might summarize a journal article to: Help convey a general idea or theme Provide crucial support for idea or theme Add credibility Establish a background or context Introduce a topic of importance A B C D E

  5. 1 2 3 4 Effective summaries are made up of concise, coherent sentences that communicate the key information of a passage. Summarizing may involve deleting extraneous material, highlighting key points, synthesizing the overall meaning, or miniaturizing primary ideas. The summary should maintain same structure and balance as the original. Remember that a summary must remain faithful to the author’s interpretation and emphasis. A B C D
