  4. Language notes: 1. London today stretches for nearly thirty miles from north to south and for nearly thirty miles from east to west. (今天的伦敦东西横亘近30英里,南北相距也近30英里。) Stretch means to spread out in space or time.e.g. The desert stretches as far as the eye could see. 2. The city is concerned with finance, but it is also a market for goods of almost every kind, form all parts of the world. (这是一座金融城市,但同时它也是个大市场。这里的货品来自世界各地,品种齐全,应有尽有。) To be concerned with means to be about/involving.e.g. Her job is something concerned with computers. 3. They cross the boundary and stop at the Law Courts, where the Lord Mayor is presented to the Lord Chief Justice. (队伍越过边界,在法院门前停下。市长在这里拜见大法官。) Present means to introduce someone formally (esp. to someone of higher rank).e.g. Later on I'd like to present you to the head teacher.

  5. Discussing the following topics. 1. Name three landmarks of London. Can you add some more information about them? Flying low over London in an aeroplane, we could easily pick out a few landmarks, for example, St. Paul's Cathedral, Westminster Abbey and Tower Bridge, which is next to the Tower of London. Inside the Tower, we can see the Crown jewels, the White Tower, and the Bloody Tower where royal families were beheaded. 2. If you have the chance, which place would you like to visit first, St. Paul's Cathedral, the British Museum, Tate Gallery, or Hyde Park? State your reasons. First, I did get the chance to have visited three of them, though I hope I can get another chance. Then I think I would like to visit Tate Gallery again. Situated on the bank of the Thames, Tate Gallery has a collection of the best of British artists, along with Monet, Dalí, Picasso, and Matisse. It is the best place for contemporary art fans.

  6. 1.Say something about the north, south, east and west of Great Britain respectively. The northern part of England is known for many old industrial towns and in the centre of England is the centre of car industry. The west of England is rich farming country. It produces dairy products and apples. The southeast of England has many towns and cities, including London, the giant capital. Wales, to the west of England, has many factories and coal mines. Each year it also holds a festival of Welsh music and poetry. Scotland is located to the north of England. It is a land of mountains, lakes and romantic castles. In winter, people go skiing and in summer it is warm and sunny. Scotland is also famous for fine sweaters and whisky products, it seems.

  7. 2. If you are given the choice, would you choose Oxford or Cambridge or would you choose a smaller college to study at? What do you think is important in choosing a university to study at? I would definitely choose to study at Cambridge or Oxford for not many people are lucky enough to be given this choice. Among many reasons, first of all, I consider the supervisor or the speciality the most important factor, for this is where the frontier of the field research. Next, outstanding classmates will have a beneficial effect on my study and life since exchanging ideas is instructive. In my opinion, the facilities (for example, the amount of books in the libraries) and extracurricular activities are part of university education. Finally, both universities are famous for its beautiful buildings and the university towns are good attractions as well. Now all I need is to work hard and see whether there will be a chance for me to make the choice.

  8. Text 2 Cultural Background   Great Britain is the official name for England, Scotland, Wales, Northern Ireland and the adjacent islands (except the Channel Islands and the Isle of Man) from 1603, when the English and Scottish crowns were united under James I of England (James VI of Scotland). With Northern Ireland it forms the United Kingdom. Language notes 1. (伦敦一度是泰晤士河北岸的一个罗马小城。但随着时间的推移,它渐渐发展成为拥有九百多万人口的国际著名大都市之一。) Grow into means to become as a result of growing.e.g. He's grown into a fine young man. 2. London is at its best when people are celebrating.
