Speed, Velocity, Acceleration

Speed, Velocity, Acceleration. Speed. The distance traveled by an object in a given amount of time. How fast an object is traveling. Speed = distance ÷ time. Speed Graph- Not moving. The graph shows an object not changing its distance, so there is no motion. Distance. Time.

  1. Speed, Velocity, Acceleration

  2. Speed • The distance traveled by an object in a given amount of time. • How fast an object is traveling. • Speed = distance ÷ time

  3. Speed Graph- Not moving • The graph shows an object not changing its distance, so there is no motion. Distance Time

  4. Speed Graph- Constant • The graph shows an object moving at a constant speed. (the graph is straight diagonal line) Distance Distance Time Time

  5. Speed Graph- Not Constant • The graph shows an object NOT moving at a constant speed.

  6. Velocity • An object’s speed and direction at a given instant. • Speed + Direction 50 m/s to the East

  7. Velocity Graphs • The graph below graphs an object’s velocity. What is happening to the object’s velocity? What is different about this graph from the others we have looked at? Speed Time

  8. Acceleration • Change in an object’s speed or direction (its velocity) over time. • Speeds up, slows down • Turns around, makes a turn

  9. Acceleration Graph Distance vs. Time • The graph below shows an object accelerating (curved line on distance vs. time graph)

  10. Acceleration GraphsVelocity (speed) vs. Time • The graph below shows an object accelerating (diagonal line on a speed vs. time graph)
