Step 1Summarize the work. • Identify the author, title, and date of publication at the top of your paper. • Express the main points and key supporting details in your own words. • Quote from the material (sparingly) to illustrate major ideas. • Reducethe work to its essence: do not write an overly detailed summary.

  4. Step 2Formulate a responseto the work. • 1) Focus on the following questions: • How is the work related to ideas covered in class? • How is the work related to current problems? • How is the work related to your own life, experience, and ideas? • 2) Evaluate the meritof the work: the importance of its points, its accuracy, completeness, organization, etc. Would you recommendthat others read it?

  5. Points to Keep in Mind • Apply the four standards of effective writing: UNITY,SUPPORT, COHERENCE, and CLEAR, ERROR-FREE SENTENCES. • Document quotations from the work by placing the page number in parentheses after the quoted material.
