  1. More Pictures from Hawaii

  2. Tuesday, May 4 We flew in a Boeing 767 like this one.  It took 7 and one-half hours to get to Maui, the island where we are staying in Hawaii. Our hotel has many beautiful waterfalls, pools, and plants everywhere! We can look out onto the ocean.  The wind blows a lot--look at the palm trees!

  3. Thursday, May 6 This is a map of Maui. It is an island. It was formed by two volcanoes. The big one was Haleakala (Hall-ee-ock-uh-la) which means mountain of the sun. The little one is mountain of the moon. I found out that every year 200 humpback whales leave Alaska when it gets really cold in November.  They swim to Maui to spend the winter in the warm water here.  Then, when the ocean around Alaska gets warmer in May, they swim back.  Lots of people here have seen the whales, but we have not seen one yet. Our hotel has fish in little ponds--200 different kinds of fish called Koi.  This is what they look like.  They are really big and fat because visitors like me feed them lots of bread.

  4. Saturday, May 8 Today we went to a town called La Haina (la high-na).  There is a kind of tree called a Banyan tree there that is over 200 years old.  This picture only shows one tree.  What looks like the trunks of smaller trees, is really branches that have grown down and put roots into the ground.  This helps support the huge tree. Sunday, May 9 I hope your moms enjoyed their special day and special gifts from you!  Mr. Bill and I went to church right here at our hotel!  This church has beautiful pictures in the windows.
