  4. Definition of Common sense

  5. Definition of Common sense according to reality

  6. To keep man free from diseases that is to make man happy, Allah (ST) has given a unique system called theimmunological system in the human body by birth.

  7. This system canrecognize things that are good (correct) or bad (wrong) for health.

  8. But in addition to good health, to make life happy man also needs correct knowledge of different aspects of life like personal, familial, social, economical, political, international, the hereafter, etc.

  9. So Allah (ST) must have given certain abilities to man to recognize things that are correct or wrong in those aspects of life.

  10. Allay gifted that most beneficial is the ‘Common sense’ or ‘Allah-gifted general knowledge’.

  11. Definition of Common sense according to the Qur’an

  12. Fact-1

Meaning: By the mind of man and that entity who created it in the right form. Then He has Ilhamedthe knowledge of sin and virtue. (As-Shams/91 : 7, 8)

  14. Explanation: The meaning of Ilham is to infuse some knowledge in the subconscious mind of man supernaturally.

  15. So, in verse 8, Allah has said that He supernaturally (without teaching) infuses the knowledge of wrong (sin) and right (virtue) in the mind of man.

  16. And the knowledge instilled through Ilham in the mind of man by Allah (without teaching) is called Common sense, Allah-gifted general knowledge, عَقْلٌ or conscience-intellect.

  17. Fact-2

  19. Meaning:No man can talk with Allah face to face, but only through indications arising in the mind, from the other side of a Curtain and through the messenger (Zibrail A.) who gives him the messages that Allah wants.

  20. Explanation: This verse states that man can communicate with Allah in three ways- • through indications arising in the mind • from the other side of a Curtain • through the messenger (Zibrail A.) who gives him the messages that Allah wants.

  21. The Prophets could communicate with Allah by all the three ways. But general people can only communicate through indications arising in the mind.

  22. In Fact-1 this indication was termed as ‘Ilham’.

  23. So in the light of this verse also, it can be said that the knowledge instilled through Ilham in the mind of men by Allah is called Common sense, Allah-gifted general knowledge, عَقْلٌ or conscience-intellect.

  24. Fact-3

... ... ... ... (Anfal/8 : 29)

  26. Meaning: oh! People of Faith if you lead your life with Taqwa (Allah consciousness) in mind then He will give you the power of differentiation (between true and false) … … … … …

  27. Explanation: Allah gifted that power which can differentiate between true and false is called Common sense, Allah-gifted general knowledge, عَقْلٌ or conscience-intellect.

  28. Definition of Common sense according to the Hadith

  29. Fact-1

  31. Meaning:The Prophet (SM) asked Wabesa (R), “Did you come here to know about vice and virtue?” He replied in the affirmative. Then the Prophet brought his fingers together, stroked his hand on his chest and told him to ask his heart for the answer.

  32. He repeated this three times and then said, “Virtue is that which gives your mind peace and comfort. And vice is that which creates in your mind doubt, hesitation and discomfort, although men gives you verdict (fatwa). (Al Maktabatush Shamelah:Mus.Ahmad,Hadith No.-18035,Tirmizi, Baihaqui)

  33. Explanation: Prophet (SM) said here that man has a mind- • that gets peace and tranquillity after doing righteous deeds and falls in doubt, hesitation and discomfort after doing sinful deeds. • that is, it can recognise righteous and sinful deeds.

  34. Man’s mind recognises righteous and sinful deeds through Ilham. And the knowledge acquired through Ilham in the mind is called Common sense.

  35. Fact-2

  37. Meaning:Umama (R) narrated, one person asked the Prophet (S), “What is Iman (Faith)?” Prophet (S) replied, “when righteous deeds give you peace and sinful deeds cause you pain, then you are a Mu’min (believer).”

  38. The person again asked, “O Prophet! What is sin?” Prophet (S) replied, “the deed with which your mind disagrees is a sin and you leave that.” (Al Maktabatush Shamelah:Mus.Ahmad,Hadith No.-22220)

  39. Explanation: Prophet (SM) said here that- • the deed which one’s mind disagrees with is a sin (wrong) • that is, the mind can understand what is wrong.

  40. And the knowledge that is instilled through Ilham by Allah in this mind is called Common sense.

  47. Fact-2

Translation:(The inhabitants of the hell) will further say, if we would have listened (to them that is the statements of the Qur’an and Sunnah)orwe would have use our common sense, we could have avoided the hell.

  49. Fact-3

(Bakarah/2 : 170)
