  1. LONGITUDE AND TIME The key to understanding of time zones in Canada is the rotation of the earth on its axis. The Earth rotates in a counter-clockwise direction when looking down from over the North Pole. The sun rises In the eastand sets in the west.

  2. It takes 24 hours for one complete rotation of the Earth. Therefore, the Earth rotates through 15 degrees in 1 hour. As a result, there are 24 one hour time zones spaced 15 degrees apart. (24 x 15°= 360°). There are 360 degrees around the circumference of the Earth.

  3. As the Earth turns, the east coast of Canada is the first to come into the sun’s light. As hours pass, more and more of Canada becomes light. Canada, however, is such a large country that the sun brings full light to Newfoundlandmany hours before it is seen in places likeBritish Columbia and the Yukon. In order to simplify this variation in time across the country, Canada has been divided into 6 time zones.

  4. Time Zones Tock Tick Tick Tock Canada is so huge it has six time zones. From east to west they are: • Newfoundland Standard Time (1/2 hr…strange, eh?) • Atlantic Standard Time • Eastern Standard Time • Central Standard Time • Mountain Standard Time • Pacific Standard Time

  5. A CHEESY SAYING (but it works…) • EAST INCREASE - add (+) 1 hour as you move east across time zones • WEST LESS - subtract (-) 1 hour as you move west across time zones * Exception – NST is plus or minus ½ hour

  6. Time is based on theposition of the sun • NIGHT IS FALLING ON EARTH • Look at the East Coast of the United States • The lights are already lit • In California the sun is still visible

  7. This pictures shows AMERICAN CITIES at night.

  8. Saguenay Sept-Iles Thunder Bay Toronto St.John’s Ottawa It’s still daylight in California Québec Montréal Those light are Boston, New York, Philadelphia and Washington. Detroit Dallas Puerto Rico Houston Miami Mexico City Havana Port-au-Prince

  9. Iceland England Atlantic Ocean France Spain Italy AFRICA
