Name and Characteristics • The real name is Rett Syndrome • Mainly girls get Rett Syndrome Characteristics • Difficulty walking and crawling • Seizures • Breathing difficulties • Slowed growth • Teeth grinding • Sleep disorders • Affects all ethic groups • Occurs 1 of every 10,000 to 23,000 girls born

  3. Characteristics cont. • Progressively loses communication skills • Repetitive hand movements such as, • Hand wringing • Hand clapping • Finger rubbing • Intellectual disabilities

How and When… • The age of Rett Syndrome varies depending on the child. • Between 6 and 18 months they start to lose voluntary and purposeful use of the hands • As Rett Syndrome goes on the systems get worse by enabling speaking and moving well. • Some girls with Rett Syndrome exhibit behaviors similar to autism

  5. Causes • Rett Syndromes is caused by a change in a gene called MECP2. • Scientists believe that Rett Syndrome changes the gene which causes a chain reaction in your other genes • Rare with men but when they have it its worse than with girls. • They have no protection of the birth defect and die shortly after birth. • They have 1 X chromosome and girls have 2 chromosomes.

  6. Treatment • This birth defect cannot be preventable because people are born with it. • Doctors have yet to find a cure for RettSyndome but, prescribe drugs to help some of the symptoms • People who have RS need assistance in daily life • Physical therapy can help with some of the symptoms
