Austria-Hungary, Germany, and Russia choose sides Assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand On June 28th 1914 a Serbian nationalist GavriloPrincip assassinated Archduke Franz Ferdinand. Franz was the heir to the thrown of the Austria-Hungry Empire. His death made tensions between Austria-Hungry and Serbia. Austria-Hungry issued an ultimatum to Serbia that would bring the assassins to justice. Austria was expecting that Serbia would reject the ultimatum, thus hoping to start was with Serbia. Shortly after the death of Archduke Franz Ferdinand, Austria-Hungry started War against Serbia. Soon a War that people thought would last weeks, lasted years.
