  18. Bible Lesson: John 19, Luke 23, Mark 15, Matthew 27 Jesus Pontius Pilate palace morning soldiers Judeans Barabbas

  19. Early in the morning, all the chief priests and the elders of the people came to the decision to put Jesus to death. They bound him and handed him over to Pilate, the governor.

  20. And they began to accuse him, saying, “We have found this man subverting our nation. He opposes payment of taxes to Caesar and claims to be Christ, a king. We have no king but Caesar.”

  21. Are you the king of the Jews?” asked Pilate.

  22. “Yes, it is as you say,” Jesus replied.

  23. Now it was the governor’s custom at the Feast to release a prisoner chosen by the crowd. At that time they had a prisoner, a murderer, called Barabbas.

  24. So when the crowd had gathered, Pilate asked them, “Which one do you want me to release to you: Barabbas, or Jesus who is called Christ?” For he knew it was out of envy that they had handed Jesus over to him.

  25. “Barabbas,” they answered. “What shall I do with Jesus who is called Christ?” Pilate asked. They all cried, “Crucify him!”“Why? What is his crime?” asked Pilate.

  26. Pilate had Jesus whipped. Then soldiers took him to the palace. A whole company of soldiers stripped him and put a scarlet robe on him. Then they twisted together a crown of thorns and set it on his head.

  27. They put a staff in his right hand and knelt in front of him. “Hail, king of the Jews!” they said. They spit on him, and took the staff and struck him on the head again and again. After they had mocked him, they took off the robe and put his own clothes on him.

  28. They brought him back to Pilate. Where do you come from?” he asked Jesus, but Jesus gave him no answer. “Do you refuse to speak to me?” Pilate said. “Don’t you know I have power either to free you or to crucify you?”

  29. Jesus answered, “You would have no power over me if it were not given to you from above. Therefore the one who handed me over to you is guilty of a greater sin.”

  30. Pilate said, “He has done nothing to deserve death. I will punish him and release him.” But they shouted all the louder, “Crucify him!”

  31. Pilate took water and washed his hands in front of the crowd. “I am innocent of this man’s blood,” he said. “It is your responsibility!”

  32. All the people answered, “Let his blood be on us and on our children!” Wanting to please the crowd, Pilate released Barabbas to them.
