1. 2. Provide new print and electronic resources to the students and staff at Victor Primary to support instruction and learning and to enhance the study of birds and migration in first and third grades. Purpose: • Benefit to the School Community: • larger variety of resources, including hard bound, paperback, big books, e-books, DVDs and videos • enhances curriculum • supports state learning standards • assists in inquiry learning • more resources available for student use • replaces worn/dated materials

3. Current Status of the Collection TOTAL = 600 = 61% of student body Both 1st and 3rd grade students study birds as part of their Science unit. The books get used very frequently and new books would be an asset to the collection and to the students learning.

Guidelines & Recommendations “Libraries must purchase a sufficient number of new books per student, and they must make a  concentrated effort to replace older materialsfor each classroom and school library on an annual basis.” –International Reading Association NY State Standards (Science grades 1-4) STANDARD 4: The Living Environment Students will understand and apply scientific concepts, principles, and theories pertaining to the physical setting and living environment and recognize the historical development of ideas in science. STANDARD 6—Interconnectedness: Common Themes Students will understand the relationships and common themes that connect mathematics, science, and technology and apply the themes to these and other areas of learning. Victor Primary Science Curriculum Each 1st and 3rd grade child participates in hands-on science activities presented in learning centers and through the use of various materials. 1st GRADE science investigations include: Migration 3rd GRADE investigations include: classes of vertebrates; animal care and habitats; animal endangerment.

6. So How Much Does This Cost? $800.00 will provide students, teachers, and parents with 51 new materials to support their curriculum needs. With the uncertainty of today’s economy and the drastic cuts to funding for education we need the support of the PTSA now more than ever.

The New York State Regents Commission on Library Services survey conducted in 2000 confirmed the findings of the well-known Colorado study and subsequent studies done in Pennsylvania, Alaska and Texas. Studies show that state reading and math test scores improved by 10 to 15 percent in schools with strong library programs and qualified school library media specialists. - New York State’s School Library Systems As the value of School Library System leadership, shared resources, and equitable access means more than ever to New York’s learners, the fiscal crisis in the state threatens their existence.
