  3. Fluorescence • Some minerals will glow when placed under ultraviolet light • These minerals look normal in regular light.

  4. Some minerals will bubble or fizz when they come in contact HCl and/or other acids like vinegar. Chemical Reactivity

  5. Optical Properties Mica • Transparent - It's clear. You can see through it, like glass. • Translucent - If you hold it up to the light you can see the light, but you can't see objects through it. • Opaque – you cannot see through it or light through it. Citrine Lapis Lazuli

  6. Taste • DO NOT TASTE MOST MINERALS! • Some minerals will taste salty. • Halite is an example of a mineral that will taste salty

  7. Magnetism • Many iron minerals will produce an invisible magnetic force field • “Lodestone” was used by Vikings more than 1,000 years ago as compasses

  8. Radioactivity • Very rare! • These minerals contain elements that are unstable that will change into other elements over time.
