  3. Overall goal! Mitosis Produce identical cells with the same amount of DNA, to replace dying cells or allow growth. Meiosis Produce cells with ½ the original amount of DNA so that offspring can receive traits from each parent. Slide 002

  4. Cells That it Occurs in! Mitosis BODY CELLS (One cell divides once, resulting in two cells) Meiosis REPRODUCTIVE CELLS (One cell divides twice, resulting in 4 cells) Slide 002

  5. Effect on DNA! Meiosis Amount of DNA is cut in ½. (Ex: Original Cell = 46 Chromosomes Daughter Cells = 23 Chromosomes) Mitosis Amount of DNA is the same. (Ex: Original Cell = 46 Chromosomes Daughter Cell = 46 Chromosomes) Slide 002
