Brief History • Current Degrees: • ► BS in Computer Science, CS • ► BS in Computer and Information Engineering, CIE • ABET Accreditation: • ► CS is accredited by: • the ABET Computing Accreditation Commission (CAC) • ► CIE is accredited by: • the ABET Engineering Accreditation Commission (EAC) • Majors: • ► 60 CIE students • ► 177 CS students

Issues with Current State • Student issues: • ► Students have to choose CS or CIE • ► Ambiguity in CIE definition makes it difficult to choose • Employer issues: • ► Difficulty distinguishing CS and CIE • ► Prefer well-rounded graduates having strong foundations both in the science and engineering of computing • Departmental issues: • ► Two separate BS degrees drain resources • ► Unbalanced enrollment • ► Not well aligned with research strengths

Proposed Degree: BS in Computer Science and Engineering (CSE) • 128 credit hours (no change) • Common core will satisfy ABET requirements • ► Both CAC and EAC accreditation • Four specialization areas: • ► Computer and Network Systems • ► Game and Simulations • ► Intelligent Systems • ► Software Systems

Advantages of BS in CSE • ► Better scheduling of courses - higher availability • ► Consistent, broad background for all students • ► World class depth in specialization areas leveraging research strengths • ► Graduates better prepared for wider range of career paths and for graduate school • ► Stronger, more marketable degree • ► Many other institutions have similar programs: • MIT, OSU, UCLA, UC Berkeley, UC Davis, UC Irvine, University of Connecticut, Georgia Tech, ...

Envisioned Differences with Existing Degrees (Tentative) • ► A new course CS282:Simulation Physics replaces Chemistry • ► Removes internship as a requirement • The following courses are considered for the core (not in CS degree): • ► EE220: Circuits I • ► PHYS181L:Physics II Lab is replaced by EE220:Circuits I Lab • ► CPE400: Data Communications and Computer Networks • The following courses are considered for the core (not in CIE degree): • ► CS326: Programming Languages • ► CS456: Automata • ► CS477: Algorithms • Courses NOT considered for the core (currently in the CIE degree): • ► CPE406: Real-time Computer Systems • ► CPE401: Computer Network Systems
