  2. ACTION VERBS Some verbs show action. There is no doubt! They tell what the subject does, Like sing and shout! Action verbs are fun to do! Now it’s time to name a few! So clap your hands and join our rhyme! Say those verbs in record time! Wiggle, jiggle, turn around Raise your arms and stomp the ground! Shake your finger and wink your eye! Wave those action verbs GOODBYE!

  4. To find the verb: Locate the subject – who or what is the sentence about? Then ask yourself, “What is it doing or what did it do?” The dog barks. Who? dog What does the dog do? barks The verb is barks, it’s what the dog does.

  5. Let’s Practice: The big lion roared loudly. Who? lion roared What did the lion do? The verb isroared, it’s what the lion did.

  6. Let’s Practice: The lighthouse shines brightly. What? lighthouse shines What does the lighthouse do? The verb isshines,it’s what the lighthouse does.

  7. Let’s Practice: The snowman waved to us. Who? snowman What did the snowman do? waved The verb iswaved, it’s what the snowman did.

  8. Let’s Practice: Sally dances in the recital. Who? Sally What does Sally do? dances The verb isdances, it’s what Sally does.

  9. Let’s Practice: Mrs. Smith arrived late. Who? Mrs. Smith What did Mrs. Smith do? arrived The verb isarrived, it’s what Mrs. Smith did.

  10. Let’s Practice: Stars shine brightly at night. What? stars What do the stars do? shine The verb isshine, it’s what the stars do.

  11. Let’s Practice: Time flies when you’re having fun. What? time flies What does time do? The verb isflies, it’s what time does.

  12. Let’s Practice: Tommy played baseball today. Who? Tommy What did Tommy do? played The verb isplayed, it’s what Tommy did.

  13. Let’s Practice: Jacob beats on his drum all day. Who? Jacob What does Jacob do? beats The verb isbeats, it’s what Jacob does.

  14. Let’s Practice: The bumble bee buzzed near the flower. What? bee What did the bee do? buzzed The verb isbuzzed, it’s what the bee did.

  15. Not all sentences have an action! But all sentences MUST have a verb. Some verbs do NOT show action. The verb Be tells what someone or something is, or was. Here are the forms of the verb Be: is are am were was

  16. To find the verb: Remember… Locate the subject – Who or what is the sentence about? Then ask yourself, “What is it doing or what did it do?” The dog is cute. Who? dog What does the dog do? WAIT A MOMENT! In this sentence the dog doesn’t do anything! The dog IS something…he is cute…so the verb is…. is The verb is is, the dog is something. It’s a form of the verb Be!

  18. Let’s Practice: Mary and Sam are ready for school. Who? Mary and Sam are What is the verb? It’s a form of the verb Be!

  19. Let’s Practice: I am so happy to be here. Who? I am What is the verb? It’s a form of the verb Be!

  20. Let’s Practice: The clock is broken. What? clock is What is the verb? It’s a form of the verb Be!

  21. Let’s Practice: The stars were bright. What? stars What is the verb? were It’s a form of the verb Be!
