  2. What is community-based tourism? • Full participation of a local community in the planning and management of tourism enterprise • Full local ownership of tourism enterprise • Tourism product is based on local cultural, social or environmental assets

Important factors in planning for community-based tourism • Location and accessibility • Demand and feasibility (how fits with other regional & national tourism, how supports local development priorities) • Local capacity and need for external support (capital, human resources, connections with marketing channels)

  4. Product design (start simple, diversify later) Budgeting and funding Training and skills development Administrative structure Important factors in starting community-based tourism

  5. Important factors in running community-based tourism • Appropriate marketing channels • Hospitality and communication skills • Standard and maintenance, feedback system • Transparency and professionalism in administration and management

  6. Product development (diversification) Understanding of risks and time delays Short term and long term planning Aspiration and practical steps for self-sufficiency Important factors in running community-based tourism

  7. Challenges and caveats related to community-based tourism • Communities are heterogeneous and encompass internal hierarchies • Capitalist, profit-oriented, entrepreneurial tourism culture may differ greatly from predominant communal values • Lack of awareness of tourism and tourists
