  14. SUMMARY • Food safety is a shared responsibility among government (food control agency), all parties involved in the food chain including primary production, handling, storage, processing, packaging, transportation, distribution and sale of food products, and CONSUMERS. • CONSUMERS need to be made aware of the importance of food safety in protecting themselves against food safety hazards both in the choice and preparation of food. • Food control system should be developed and implemented in a transparent manner. The confidence of consumers in the safety and quality of the food supply depends on their perception of the integrity and effectiveness of food control operations and activities. Therefore, it is important that stakeholders (including consumers) are allowed to participate in reviewing food legislation, where appropriate. Vientiane, LAO PDR, 21230905

  15. For effective and efficient participation, target group of consumers should be defined in accordance with the kind and objective of participation. • Government (in cooperation with stakeholders or other agencies) should establish a diversity of approaches to enhance consumer awareness and participation in food safety. Vientiane, LAO PDR, 21230905
