Class discussion and analysis of Chapter 4 • Significance of title: “Painted Faces and Long Hair” • Introduce symbolism/allegory • symbol? • allegory? • What is the purpose of symbols in literature? • LOTF is itself a symbol; an allegorical tale works on many different levels, thus, reader interpretation of these symbols is of great importance.

  3. Individually: compose a list of ten symbols in LOTF • frame: The conch represents ____ because ____. • HW: Symbols may carry more than one meaning. Explore as many of these meanings as possible for each symbol. Add multiple meanings to your ten symbols. • 1. conch: The conch represents power because whoever possesses it can speak. (power, leadership, unity, authority, rules, democracy, home) • 2. SYMBOL = _____, _____, _____ (multiple meanings)

  4. Day 2 (Symbolism + Allegory) • Check list of 10 symbols for completion. • BW: What’s the relationship -/- symbolism + allegory? • Groups: Develop “Top Ten” list • similarities/differences exist? Closure: Virtually everything in the novel has more than one meaning  many different levels. What do you think Golding’s allegory will teach readers?
