Drawing Exercises. Positive and Negative Space. Positive Space : the space occupied by the actual object in the image. Negative Space : the areas around and behind the positive spaces. The shapes of the negative spaces are determined by the shapes of the positive spaces.

  2. Positive and Negative Space • Positive Space: • the space occupied by the actual object in the image. • Negative Space: • the areas around and behind the positive spaces. The shapes of the negative spaces are determined by the shapes of the positive spaces.

  3. An incorrect approach to negative space focuses on the form of the object while drawing The correct approach to negative space drawing involves observing the shapes formed between different parts of the object, or between one edge of the object and a boundary.

Full Light – white: the strongest point where the light source is hitting the sphere • Reflected Light – Light grey: found along the edge of the object and separates the shadow edge from the cast shadow • Half tone – midgrey: area that is in neither direct light or shadows • Shadow edge – dark grey: the area where the sphere is turning back away from you • Cast Shadow – black: the darkest tone in your drawing, it is always opposite the light source. This area is void of light because it is being blocked by the sphere.
