  1. Repacking the Standards Elko County School District CCSS Math Professional Development Module 5, Week 2 Grades 1 & 2

  2. Step 1: Target a Standard K Counting & Cardinality K-5 Number Operations & Base Ten 3-5 Number Operations & Fractions 6-8 The Number System 6-7 Ratios & Proportional Data HS- Number & Quantity

  3. Which 1st and 2nd grade standards support the study of fractions? • Find and highlight fractions in your standards. What building skills are you responsible in teaching? • Look in Scope and Sequence to find fraction standards. When are your students learning about fractions?

  4. K Counting & Cardinality K-5 Number Operations & Base Ten Counting & CardinalityKindergarten 6-7 Ratios & Proportional Data “Counting and Cardinality underlies Operations and Algebraic Thinking as well as Number Operations in Base Ten. It begins with early counting and telling how many in one group of objects. Addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division grow from these early roots. From its very beginnings, this Progression involves important ideas that are neither trivial or obvious; these ideas need to be taught, in ways that are interesting and engaging to young students.” -The Common Core Standards Writing Team

  6. K Counting & Cardinality K-5 Number Operations & Base Ten Number Operations & Base TenK-5 6-7 Ratios & Proportional Data “Students’ work in the base-ten system is intertwined with their work on counting and cardinality, and with the meanings and properties of addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division. Work in the base-ten system relies on these meanings and properties, but also contributes to deepening students’ understanding of them.” -The Common Core Standards Writing Team

  8. “(Unpacking will) increase student achievement by ensuring educators understand specifically what the new standards mean a student must know, understand, and be able to do.(Unpacking) may also be used to facilitate discussion among teachers and curriculum staff and to encourage coherence… (Unpacking), along with on-going professional development is one of many resources used to understand and teach the CCSS.” -North Carolina Dept of Public Instruction Unpacking and Repacking UNPACKING Step 1: Target a standard Step 2: Chunk the Main Categories Step 3: Identify all standard components Step 4: Identify the Vertical Alignment across grade levels Step 5: Identify Key Vocabulary REPACKING Step 6: Add Clarifying Information Step 7: Review Teaching Strategies

  9. Why are we Repacking Standards? • To understand what the standards are asking students to know, understand, and be able to do • To make time for professional discussion about the standards • To build upon and use common terminology when discussing the implementation of the standards • To reflect on teaching strategies and plan for implementation
