  1. Is Enduring Love an appropriate title?

  2. Reviewing Homework • Split into groups of ‘Enduring Love is an appropriate title’ and ‘Enduring Love is not an appropriate title’ • Share the ideas that came from your ‘Why trees?’ • Rank order the key reasons you came up with • Rank order the top 5 questions which came out of your ‘Why trees?’

  3. Considerations for Enduring Love being an appropriate title • Jed’s love for Joe endures even in the face of adversity • Clarissa and Joe’s love does ultimately endure • Jean Logan experiences the pain and destruction that can be associated with enduring love • Clarissa has an enduring ‘love affair’ with John Keats

  4. Enduring Love: not the most appropriate title • Debatable whether Jed actually loves Joe – arguably, the ‘love’ Jed feels for Joe has to be endured by Joe. • Clarissa and Joe appear to fall out of love with each other. At times, Clarissa appears to endure Joe rather than actually love him. • Joe endures Clarissa’s enduring love affair with John Keats.

  5. Speed date • Make an inner and outer circle of chairs and sit opposite a partner. You will need your text, exercise books and a pen. • Inner circle, wear a post-it saying ‘appropriate title’/ ‘inappropriate title’. • Outside circle, you will be given a quotation/ extract from the text and have 2 minutes in your “dating pairs” to decide whether the line/ extract you’re holding matches what’s on your partner’s post-it. • If you think you’ve found a match, you need to thoroughly explain it to the rest of the group when the time is up. • Chocolate to be won! • Venn diagram

  6. Essay title: Is Enduring Love an appropriate title for the novel? • Introduction • 4 main paragraphs: • 2 paragraphs on why the title isappropriate • 2 paragraphs on why the title isn’t particularly fitting • Each of these paragraphs should include a TS, main quotation and ALAAL, with supporting embedded quotation/s • Conclusion / judgment

  7. Write your ALAAL paragraph • TS: Begin with your topic sentence, ensuring you include McEwan’s name. • Q: Reflect on the main quotation you decided upon and use the ‘Under the magnifying glass’ sheet to help you focus your close analysis if you need to. • ALAAL: • Aim to embed at least one supporting quotation. • Remember BABOP and other supporting words to help extend the detail of your analysis. • Consider second possibilities.
