  2. Project Overview Animal Project It’s going to be an exciting month in second grade. This week, students will continue working on our final project about animals. We are partnering with the kindergarten classes to raise money to buy items for the animals at the Indianapolis Zoo. We will be learning about animals and their habitats. Our field trip to the Indianapolis Zoo is on Friday, May 23rd. Please return permission slips and money by Friday. May 9th.

I Can: • Identify the meaning or lesson of a story. • Give reasoning for author’s purpose • Read fluently and accurately Reading Animal Habitats and Homes Noise Level 1 Monday: Open your Treasures Book to pages 124 and 125 to discuss Habitats and Homes and complete the Talk About It question. Then, read “My Home in Alaska” to learn your new vocabulary words and discuss making inferences. Tuesday and Wednesday: Read Nutik, the Wolf Pup, by Jean Craighead George. Thursday and Friday: Complete the reading comprehension packet on Nutik, the Wolf Pup and turn into the reading file. • Materials Needed • Treasure Books • Comprehension Packets • Pencils Project Connection Animals

WritingEndangered Animals Noise Level: 1 Monday: Use your endangered animal research to start writing a news story about your animal. Make sure to include details about why your animal is endangered and how this animal can be helped. Tuesday-Wednesday: Continue writing your news story. Be sure to write about who, what, where, when and why. Thursday and Friday: Edit your writing. Make sure to have a title, correct capitalization, punctuation and spelling. Be sure to have a final copy to turn in to the writing file at the end of stations on Friday. • Materials Needed • Animal research fact sheet • Paper • Pencils • Computers Project Connection: Animals

Self-Selected Reading / Accelerated Reader • I Can: • Read fluently • Restate facts and recall information Noise Level 0 • Choose a library book or a book of choice that you have not read. • Be sure you picked a book that you can read alone. • Silently read . • After you finish your book, write the name of the book in your Data Binder. • Be sure to fill in the information about your book in your binder. • If you can answer all the questions in your Data Binder, get your laptop and log on to AR to take your test. • Record your AR score in your Data Binder. . • Materials Needed • Data binder • Book of choice • Computer
