Academy of the Arts • Grade level field trip • 2nd grade coordinates two field trips each year . • Desert Botanical Garden- March 12 • TBD – Mrs. Mathis is working on it • Last year’s accomplishments • Terramar ‘s 2nd grade scored highest in the DVUSD in the area of math and 7th in the area of reading on the Stanford 10 nationwide assessment. • Academy Mission Statement • By utilizing an arts-focused curriculum, we will enhance each child’s sense of belonging, sense of self, and ability to achieve academically.

Daily Schedule: 8:15 – 8:45: Morning Work 8:45 – 9:30: Writing 9:30– 9:45: Word Work 9:45 – 10:15: Reading 10:15 – 11:00: Literacy Centers/SGI 11:00 – 11:40: Recess/Lunch 11:45 – 12:05: Read Aloud 12:05 – 12:25: Reading Comprehension 12:25 – 12:40: Problem of the Day 12:40 – 1:25: Math 1:30 – 2:15: Specials 2:15 – 2:55: Science/Social Studies 2:55 – 3:00: Clean-up and dismissal

Instructional and Learning Shifts - ELA • Informational Text- Reading Street is 50% Nonfiction • Vocabulary Building- Reading Street- Amazing Words • Assessments: • Weekly Reading Test is assessing on taught skills, NOT the weekly story like in Harcourt. • We will also identify students reading strengths and focus areas using the DIBELS and DRA assessments. • Reading Street Baseline & Unit Assessments will be used if needed.

Reading Center Packets • Based on Reading Street • Students work in small, multi-ability groups • Flexible student grouping: DRA, DIBELS, and teacher observation • Students pulled to work in guided reading groups with texts at similar levels • Whole group: Monday, introduction to concepts, strategies, and story • Monday-Friday: Centers and Guided Reading • Center packets: Completed throughout week and due, completed, on Fridays

  10. Writing • The Writing Process used through the Write From the Beginning Program • Pre-write • Drafting • Revising • Editing • Publishing • Grading

Spelling • The primary goal is to make the students lifelong spellers. • Spelling will be comprised of 5 high frequency words and 10 words that come from our Reading Street weekly spelling pattern(s). • Spelling tests will be held on Thursdays. • They will include: 3 dictation sentences and the 15 spelling list words.

  18. Thinking Maps • Terramar is a “Thinking Maps” school! • What are Thinking Maps??? • *They are a tool for helping children map out their thinking and make sense of their own learning. • Used daily in our classroom…look for them to come home! • Ask your child about his/her maps!!!

Homework: Tic Tac Tomework • Handed out every Friday • Due the following Friday morning • No “Fun Recess” for students who fail to complete and turn in homework packet on time • Student’s responsibility to complete & return homework • Homework – always a review • Reading log – 100 minutes a week! • As a parent, your role is to check your child’s homework packet. • Tic TacTomework Template

Volunteers • Must be trained by district • ***More info to follow when training dates are made available. • Tuesday, August 28th 7:30 AM – 8:00 AM • Tuesday, September 11th 7:30 AM– 8:00 AM • Wednesday, September 19th 7:00 PM– 7:45 PM • *All trainings are held in the school library. Additional training dates can be found on the Terramar website. • In our room volunteers may: • ***work in center groups during reading • ***run copies • ***have things sent home • ***attend field trips • ***help out at parties
