  1. Estimation with Division using compatible numbers: • Round the divisor to its greatest place. • Change the dividend to the closest multiple of the divisor. • Do the basic division fact. • Zap each 0 on the divisor that you can zap on the dividend. • Tack any 0’s that are left on the dividend onto the quotient. • ex. 71,345 ÷ 82 ≈ • Round the 82 ≈ 80. • Think of the multiple of 8 that is closest to 71, that ‘s 72 ! • Replace the 71,345 with 72,000. • Think, “How many times will 8 divide into 72?” 9 is the answer. • How many 0’s are on the divisor? 1 • Zap 1 zero from the divisor and dividend. • Tack the 2 zeros left on the dividend to the quotient (answer). • Final answer 71,345 ÷ 82 ≈ 72,000 ÷ 80 ≈ 900 • ex. 3,546 ÷ 39 ≈ 3,600 ÷ 40 ≈ 90 • 203,651 ÷ 713 ≈ 210,000 ÷ 700 ≈ 300
