Advances in Agriculture • Song Dynasty • New irrigation techniques: • Underground wells • Dragon backbone pump--allowed one person to pump water instead of several people to scoop water • Cultivated land increased • Fast-ripening rice--grew quickly so three crops could grow in the time it used to take one crop to grow

  3. Advances in Agriculture • growth of new crops • cotton • tea! Results: More food --> Increased population!

  4. City Life • Tang Dynasty • Chang'an--largest city, huge, bustling trade center • Mix of many cultures:China, Korea, Persia, Arabia, and Europe • Religious and philsophical center: Buddhism, Daoism, and Christianity • Song Dynasty • Cities continued to grow

  5. Trade in China and Beyond Trade in China • Traders used China's rivers to ship goods on barges and ships • Tang Dynasty improved and expanded Grand Canal which allowed Chinese to move goods and crops longer distances
