  3. CONDEMED OUR HIGH SCHOOLS TODAY ***HUGELY WASTEFUL*** ***NEED TO BE DISMANTLED*** ***TOTALLY OBSOLETE***

  4. CRITICISMS • Environment has changed – children now reach puberty 1.5 years earlier. • Popular culture has filled void caused by the failure of our schools to capture the imagination of our adolescents. • Intellectual awakening must occur in high school vice college.

  5. CRITICISMS continued • All schools, rich and poor, are more alike then different. • High school should not be looked at as an endpoint. It should be a transitional phase, K-16. • More emphasis on what happens next vice what has been accomplished.

  6. CRITCISMS continued • Serious education needs to start before the age 18. • Curriculum needs improvement in clarity, and simplification. • Money for public high schools not being spent wisely. • Community Colleges need to play a larger and more important role in education.

  7. PROPOSED SOLUTIONS • FINISH HIGH SCHOOL TWO YEARS EARLIER. • Option 1 – Two years at community college followed by two years at college/university. • Option 2 – Straight to 4 year college/university. • Option 3 – Enter job market or national service first, followed by return to school within reasonable amount of time (before you become too old). • Option 4 – Vocation School and then the job market.

  8. CHANGES • Finish high school two years earlier. • Reallocate fiscal resources from high school to community colleges, and 4 year colleges/universities. • Fix inner city schools first because they are the most broken.

  9. CHANGES continued • Turn schools into 24 hour education and emergency centers. • Schools should be opened 24 hours a day, and all year round to include the holidays. • Capitalize on modern technology. • Create new centers that encompass the arts, sports, and practical skills.

  10. BENEFITS • Option 1. Community colleges are highlighted with mix of students with non-traditional students. • Option 2. Students complete degree faster with little to no waste of time. • Option 3. Students receive workforce experience, and then return to school with stronger desire to learn. • Option 4 – Vocational skills are best learned between the ages of 16-18. Why wait?

  11. Students may be physically more mature, but are they mentally ready for this radical change? What are the effects of losing the 4 year high school experience? Aren’t we rushing things? What is the big hurry? SOME THOUGHTS TO PONDER

  12. THOUGHTS continued • Don’t we already have this system somewhat in place? • Students can drop out, receive GED, and join workforce early. • Students can graduate early, and more on to college sooner. • Students can start to take AP, and/or actual college classes as early as 11th grade.

THOUGHTS continued • Can colleges and universities handle a younger population? • Isn’t UNCW experimenting with this concept by having a high school aboard its campus? • How is this concept working in other countries? • Finally, is our system really that broke and in need of such a dramatic change?
