  2. Westward Expansion • Watch video on the Mexican-American War found on Hippocampus • So much land was acquired after the Mexican-American War; many started moving west; became an issue to decide if the western territories who apply for statehood should be slave states or free states

  3. Warm Up: • Look at the map on the following slide. Which area of the U.S. was NOT ceded or bought from Mexico?

  7. Possible Answers… Fugitive Slave Act - 1850 • This act forced any federal official who did not arrest a runaway slave liable to pay a fine. This was the most controversial part of the Compromise of 1850 and caused many abolitionists to increase their efforts against slavery. This act increased the Underground Railroad activity as fleeing slaves made their way to Canada.
