OVERVIEW • Pan-European campaign • Launched in 2002 by former EU Commissioner for Environment Margot Wallström • Organised each year from 16-22 September (CFD) • Week-long programme of public activities and events besides implementation of permanent measures • Annual theme & slogan: In 2014, “Our streets, our choice.”

TYPICAL MEASURES (2013) • Akureyri: alternative modes (foot, bike or public transport); Park-in Day; bike trips and walking tours; Travel survey in the town's elementary schools + Two new bike paths + Town Ctr closed to traffic (several days) • Kopavogur: Campaign to encourage inhabitants’ use of environmentally friendly transport; “Icelandic day of nature” walk + school travel survey + new bike lanes, signposts, storage • Mosfellsbær: Campaign; city discovery bike ride, ‘transboundary’ “Icelandic day of nature” ride; school mobility programme; "Cycling to the future“ conference; pedestrians’ area; "Dr. Bike“&fun prog.! • Reykjavik: Air quality measurement; cycling bridge; street closures; cycling & PT conference; traffic calming; workplace/school travel plans; clean vehicle fleets • Seltjarnarnes: In Icelandic!

Those that ‘got away…’ • Hafnarfjordur (2011): a week of actions including developing public bike-share systems; improvement of bike storage; extension of public transport services. • Garðabær (2010): Schoolchildren’s mobility (on foot w Mum and Dad)! + Mayor-led cycling tour w neighbouring mayors + Speed reduction programmes in zones near schools • Sveitarfélagið Garður* (2010): public campaign w leaflet; improved bus stops; schoolkids’ exhibition; walks and outdoor fun for healthy living; ,,In town without my car day,, + infrastructure improvements • Sveitarfélagið Árborg* (2009): Bike and bus promotion; clean vehicle promotion; transport themed day@school; free municipal bus! *Could have bid for Award! My Impressions • Small low density towns where space isn’t an issue • Cars the most popular means for getting around • Cycling most popular among tourists, little in the way of marked cycle routes in smaller towns • Lots of measures to slow car-traffic • Opportunity for cycling in your generally flat towns • Some ideas for Höfn etc. are below in the slide notes

  12. 2014: OUR STREETS, OUR CHOICE • In Essence: Reallocating street space to improve quality of urban life for citizens • Why? Vehicles occupy the majority of non-occupied public space, yet 30% citizens don’t have cars! • Actions: convert car-parking space  mini parks; streets  adopt community activities within thoroughfares  cafés/al fresco dining • More Ideas: ped/bike infrastructure + workplace/school travel planning + city walking/bike tours + car-sharing/car-pooling • Long-term solutions; ‘Traffic Evapouration;’ e.g. Kajaani, FI: access restrictions; improved PT • Challenges: Citizen/media/retailer objection • Remedies: Dialogue, Science, Political Allies • Powerpoint summary online at: tinyurl.com/or5mjva • Thematic Guidelines available for download: tinyurl.com/nosapgc

  13. 2014: Countries’ Planning • Slovenia: Materials’ translated, meetings w municipalities, street closure testing, public promotion, national website, inter-ministerial working group • Austria: Renewing relations with various stakeholders (NGOs, chambers of commerce, PT companies, municipalities etc), campaign materials’ prep, website, giveaways, bonus booklet (discount prices, insurance, car-share testing, free bike-rental, regional train promo, blooming streets campaign • Italy: Website (very popular referral site for the EMW homepage!), Minister letter to all municipalities, use of EC rep, collaboration w MoEducation, car-sharing, mobility manager and ‘work-bike-safe’ confs.

  16. A Moment of Icelandic Glory? The EMW Award Rewards authorities doing the most to raise public awareness and implement sustainable urban transport measures. Offers a free promotional video – a 3’ bi-lingual clip to highlight achievements. Gives promotion via the EMW comms channels, events and publications. Brings visibility even if shortlisted! Ceremony: Brussels, March 2015 Online: www.mobilityweek.eu/award/how-to-apply/ • Steps: • Register! • Sign the Charter! • Fulfil three criteria: a week of activities, one new permanent measure and a Car Free Day event; • Complete the app. form with details on events, measures, alt. transport modes, partners, signed charter, map of closed area • Submit 1st Nov • Transmit supporting docs (press, video, jpegs) by 15 Nov  

CIVITAS: City-VITAlity-Sustainability…or cleaner and better transport in cities • An EU initiative researching, demonstrating and facilitating practical and policy-related measures that contribute to sustainable urban transport • Demonstrates good (and bad) practice through 700+ measures in 62 cities through 15 projects • EUR 275 million mobilised to improve urban mobility and quality of life (72%EC co-funded) • Alongside 150 further cities signing the CIVITAS Declaration they constitute the ‘Forum Network’ • Annual Forum is in Casablanca, 23-26 Sept. • civitas-initiative.eu

  24. Hudiksvall: Bicycle policy – invitation for suggestions for new bicycle paths and an extended cycling network. Walk and bike to school – a competition and a challenge for school children “In town with my car” – vehicle-free street in the center for one day, except for bicycles. Bicycle friendly workplace – an award to workplaces that make it easier for employees to choose the bike as a means of transport. Bike theme in your storefronts – a contest for merchants on having the bike friendliest shop window “Winter cyclist” – a campaign aiming at increasing the number of cyclists that take the bike to and from work during the winter.
