  2. The goal of all principals should be to build a school environment where literacy is the focus of the schools vision.

  3. What Principals need to Know about Reading Instruction • Principals must know where they are, where they need to go, and how to get there. • Course work, professional development, read current literacy books, understand NCLB (www.principalportal.net/module_improv_read_lit/chap2_resources/initiatives_acts.pdf) and its relevance to curriculum selection, technology, annual progress, and the issue and the scientific research based reading programs. • Module discusses… • Phonics vs. whole language approach (early years) • Five essential elements of reading instruction (early years) • Provide books appropriate to age and reading level (later years)

  4. Leadership Strategies • Principals must identify a type of literacy program best suited for their school. • They must know how to implement the program. This program should be included in the school improvement plan. • They must know how to assess the program (old and new) to constantly check to see if it is working. • There are different types of reading programs for the elementary and secondary level (look at the module if you want to know what they are!!!).
