History • 1785 (January 27): UGA was incorporated by an act of the General Assembly, and Georgia became the first state to charter a state-supported university. • 1786: Abraham Baldwin was selected president of the university • 1801: The university was established. 633 acres were given to the board of trustees, and this determined the site of the university. • 1804: The first class of students graduated from UGA. • 1843: The curriculum was widened to include courses in law. • 1872: The university received federal funds to provide instruction in agriculture and mechanical arts.

Mission With its statewide mission and core characteristics, the University of Georgia endeavors to prepare the University community and the state for full participation in the global society of the twenty-first century. Through its programs and practices, it seeks to foster the understanding of and respect for cultural differences necessary for an enlightened and educated citizenry. It further provides for cultural, ethnic, gender, and racial diversity in the faculty, staff, and student body. The University is committed to preparing the University community to appreciate the critical importance of a quality environment to an interdependent global society.

Curricula and degrees • 22 Baccalaureate degrees in more than 140 fields • 35 Master’s degrees in 137 fields • Specialist in Education degree in 19 major fields • 5 Doctoral degrees in 96 areas • Professional degrees in law, pharmacy, and veterinary medicine • More than 170 study abroad and exchange programs • 17 schools and colleges

Faculty • Total: 2,478 full-time and 430 part-time • This includes instructional and research/public service • Total graduate assistants: 1,981 • This includes instructional and research • 96% of the full-time faculty were tenured or tenure-track, and 97% hold a doctorate or other terminal degree

Morehead • President’s Cabinet consists of the following: • Senior VP for Academic Affairs and Provost • Chief of Staff • Executive Director of Legal Affairs • Director of Athletics • 9 Vice Presidents • 1 Vice Provost • 7 Associate Provosts

Governance • Governed by the Board of Regents under the University System of Georgia • 1931 – The General Assembly of Georgia placed all state-supported institutions of higher education under this jurisdiction • BOR’s executive officer – the chancellor – exercises supervisory control over all institutions in the University System, with each institution having its own executive officers and faculty • UGA and other University System institutions follow BOR policy and procedures – from Student Affairs to Academic affairs

  16. Student Affairs • The Office of the Vice President for Student Affairs has a total of approximately 15 staff members. The OVPSA also houses a variety of departments, including the following: • Disability Resource Center • Greek Life Office • LGBT Resource Center • Office of Student Conduct • Student Veterans Resource Center • University Housing

  17. Academic Affairs • The department of Academic Affairs is under the direction of the Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs and Provost. Approximately 10 staff members and approximately 35 separate units report and are housed under the department of Academic Affairs/Provost. • The SVPAAP reports to the President who then reports to the BOR.
