  1. The Philippians Hymn (Phil. 2:6-11) By: Paul Hamilton (I wrote the presentation, not the hymn.)

  2. The Purposes of the Hymn • Clearly proclaim the divinity of Christ • Christ is two natures, one divine person • Reveals the reason for the Incarnation • Show Christ as the model of all human conduct

  3. Christ is Divine: Form of God • ὑπάρχων: “though (already) being in the form of God” • Christ’s Equality with God. • τὸεἶναι ἴσα θεῶ is the subject. • This is my gut interpretation; there are others, though!

  4. Jesus is not a Robber • ἀρπαγμὸν: “something to be grasped at”? • No! It means robbery • Literally: being equal to God was not regarded as robbery. • Jesus did not rob God of his glory by claiming to be equal to God.

  5. God became Man • Emptied himself • Taking the form of a slave • Becoming to the likeness of man • Known as man • Became obedient, • Suffered death.

  6. Humility and Obedience • Humility: • He emptied himself • Taking the form of a slave • Humbled himself • Obedience: • Obediently accepting even death on a Cross

  7. Exaltation • Every knee must bend… • Quotes Isaiah 45:23 • Spoken by God • Christ is the Word of Justice from his mouth • This text is then applied to Christ

  8. Elohim vs. YHWH • Both are names for God in the OT. • Elohim refers to God as Creator and omnipotent • YHWH to God’s redemption of and providence over creation. • YHWH  Adonai  κύριος • Thus, κύριος is a fitting title for Jesus, who is God’s saving action in creation!

  9. Why did God become Man? • Isaiah 45: Christ is the Justice from the Mouth of God. • To die and rise as God and man • To be exalted as God and man • Jesus is YHWH, the redemption and providence of God.

  10. Motivation to be Humble and Charitable: • The example of Christ • If the Son of God can humble himself to love his neighbor, what reason do we have not to do the same? • Be humble and obedient as Christ was.
