Higher education in Ancient China Yuelu Academy: • Yuelu Academy is an ancient and famous academy in China • It was established by Zhudong, in 976A.D at the time of Northern Song Dynasty • The academy accepted disciplines throughout the Song, Yuan, Ming and Qing Dynasties • It was only in 1903 that the academy was transformed from a school of traditional Confucian learning to an institute of higher learning and in 1926 it was officially named Hunan University

  14. the former Shanghai University SHU in Old China, about 80 years ago ……. • In the 1920s, the Communist Party and Nationalist Party had cooperated to setup a Shanghai University and the Huang Pu Military School in old history of China. • But, this SHU existed for only five years until after the two­parties dissolved their co-operations. “Peking U Top at North; SHU Top at South” “北有北大,南有上大” “Huang Pu Top for Actions; SHU Top for Liberal Arts” “武有黄浦,文有上大”

  17. The President of SHU: Chien Weichang • Born in 1912 at Wuxi, Jiangsu, China • Awarded Ph. D. degree at University of Toronto in 1942 • Worked with von Karman, at CIT, 1942-1946 • As a Vice-President to serve Tsinghua University, since 1956 • Became a Righty in 1958 because of different view about separation of Science and Engineering in Comprehensive University • As a President of Shanghai University of Technology since 1982 and of SHU since 1994 • Since then, he has run the university according his thought, mission, vision, and so on • Used to be a Vice-Chairman of The Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC) from 1994 to 2003

More about SHU…. • Authorized by the Academic Degree Commission under the State Council, SHU is among the first group of universities to confer degrees. • The majority of the Ph.D. programs and master's degree programs are applicable to those who are on-the-job and who have received equivalent education, and the Ph.D. programs to visiting scholars both at home and abroad and to advanced refresher students. • According to the agreement from the State Education Commission, colleges of all the disciplines can enroll on-the-job candidates with separate exam.
