  2. I. Annotation of Already Existing Material • About 15 Wichita Narratives, collected by Rood • A 28 minute Wichita Conversation (with embedded texts) collected by Rood, Field Work notes and audio records of Rood • Haddon Texts (from 1940s) • A Collection of Traditional Wichita Songs

  3. Ia. Annotation of Wichita Narratives • digitized all sounds (44kHz, 16bit) • use Shoebox for annotation and automatic parsing with lexicon • Import data into ELAN - linguistic type issues with annotation - time alignment

  4. Ib. Annotation of Wichita Conversation • digitized sound (44kHz, 16bit) • Annotation done in ELAN from start • detail timing, turn taking, pauses, with indication of song segments and narratives that are embedded inside

New Material Collection • 2 fieldwork trips to Anadarko in Summer of 2002 - individual interviews to help with annotation of older material (audiotaped) and obtain audio for word lists - 4 informal meetings between tribal elders (audio+videotaped, 4-9 participants), and look for other collections • 1 recent fieldwork trip to Anadarko in March 2003 - individual interviews and more annotation of old texts (Mühldorfer) - videotape attempts were unsuccessful

  7. IIb. New Material Processing • Following the DOBES Workflow - DMFs of Video Tapes Obtained - Make Sessions from the DMFs (in progress) - Some sessions have been processed and we are starting annotation • Problems - Sessions are very “choppy”, hard to define - The nature of the material is very different from the older texts! Code Switching, and other language contact issues are at work.

  8. III. The Nature of the New Material Collection • Audio Recordings and Individual Interviews -One consultant was able to assist with retelling, translation, etc … of the older spoken material. -Another consultant produced many individual words, good for Lexicon • Video Recordings – very different from old material - mostly spoken in English - words and phrases in Wichita - a few continuous segments in Wichita

  10. IV. Continue Work on Lexicon • Various Versions of a Multimedia Dictionary • HTML/XML format • Links to Sound Files with Individual Words • Sound files from 48 cassettes, 18 reels (all digitized and annotated) • Ability to Search the Database for particular items (x-referenced)
