  1. Check In Check Out (CICO) Program Overview

  2. What is CICO? The CICO Program is a school-wide, check-in, check-out prevention program for students who are beginning to engage in problem behavior. The goal of the program, is to catch students early who are displaying disruptive behavior, and provide them with more frequent feedback on their behavior to prevent future problem behavior.

  3. Which students do well in the program? Students who are beginning to act out, but are not currently engaging in dangerous or seriously disruptive behavior are good candidates for the program.

  4. How do teachers participate in the CICO Program? Teachers participate by providing both verbal and written feedback to students at pre-determined times. The feedback should be quick, positive, and remind students what they need to work on if the goal was not met.

  5. Who will be responsible for checking students in and out? A team is formed within a participating school is in charge of checking in students in during the morning and out during the afternoon.

  6. How do teachers make a referral? A referral is made to the CICO Team that meets weekly. In collaboration with the teacher, the team will determine whether or not the program is appropriate, or whether another intervention is more appropriate.

  7. How long are students in the CICO Program? At the end of every grading period the CICO Team will look at each student’s data to determine if he or she is ready to be faded off the CICO Program.

  8. Criteria for a student to qualify in the CICO Program…………. • The student would need at least 2 office referrals to qualify. • Teacher will meet with the CICO Committee regarding referring a student, and will receive 2 weeks of data collection materials. During those 2 weeks, the student will be observed in their classes by a CICO committee member. • The data will be analyzed, and the CICO will determine if the student qualifies. • If the student qualifies, the parents will be notified and the students will be introduced into the program.

  9. To exit a student from the CICO Program…. • The student must be in the program for at least one grading period. • The teacher and the student will be notified. • Data will still be collected, but students will meet with us only on a weekly basis for 1 month. • The student will then graduate from the program, and will be on “monitor status “ with the CICO Committee.

  10. What if the student is not successful in the CICO Program? If the student is not successful in the CICO Program, a customized and more intensive behavior plan will be implemented for the student.
