  2. Kennedy and the Cold War A. US/Russia- 1950s 1. After Korea winds down in 1953, the US stays relatively calm for the rest of the 1950s. a. Economy soars b. Jobs c. New housing (suburbs!) d. Massive industrial growth

  3. Kennedy and the Cold War 2. Despite this lull, both Russia and the US are ramping up the arms race- a. a competition between one or more nations for possessing the best armed forces. b. Nuclear arms, soldiers, weapons, etc.

  4. Kennedy and the Cold War B. 1960-1962 1. John F. Kennedy, elected to replace Eisenhower. a. Young, exciting, good-looking and used TV/Radio to gain a public following. 2. Cold War escalates: a. Bay of Pigs invasion

  5. Kennedy and the Cold War 1. 1500 Cubans trained by the CIA to invade Cuba and overthrow Communist Leader Fidel Castro. 2. Kennedy gave the order… Complete disaster and failure! 3. Strengthens Cuba and Soviet ties

  6. Kennedy and the Cold War b. Berlin Crisis 1. Berlin Wall built in 1961 a. Barbed wire, guard towers, machine guns 2. All contact between East and West Germany cut off in August, 1961. 3. Kennedy speech in support of democracy- “I am a Berliner!”

  7. Kennedy and the Cold War c. Cuban Missile Crisis 1. 1962- In response to the Bay of Pigs, Castro asks the Soviets for protection. a. They send mid-range ballistic missiles (MRBM) b. The Soviets were interested because the US had missiles in Turkey, aimed at the Soviet Union!

  8. Kennedy and the Cold War 2. Satellite photos showed missiles were in Cuba 3. Kennedy orders a blockade of Cuba, leading to Soviet ships being turned back. 4. This bought time, and in the next few days, Kennedy accepted a Soviet offer to remove missiles.

  9. Kennedy and the Cold War C. Police Action- Using force without declaring war. 1. US sends “advisors” to Vietnam in 1955. a. Sent by Eisenhower, supported by Kennedy 2. Advisors are US soldiers sent to train local military (We have advisors in Iraq and Afghanistan today!)
