  2. Where cold weather persists, why are apartment buildings block-shaped? Answer: The less surface area per volume, the less heat escapes and the less heating fuel consumed. Like the 3 x 3 and 4 x 4 blocks in the transparency, inner regions present no surface for heat loss. Question 1 • A group of cubical blocks that make a larger cube has less surface area than any other shape made with cubical blocks.

  3. What would be the ratio of surface area/volume for a 5 x 5 block cube? Answer: (25 x 6)/125 = 6/5. Question 2
