  3. Started in 1993 in a living room – brainchild of Richard Shaw DD to be a traditional support service for disabled people with 2 key additional aims : • To ensure we supported all disabled people including BME Communities • To avoid any campaigning www.disabilitydirect.com

  4. DD initially funded by BT, Opps For Vols, Comic Relief, Scope 1st 4 years no funding from local authority – Why? www.disabilitydirect.com

  5. Politics? • No real track record • We were not ready for LA funding!!! www.disabilitydirect.com

  6. Why Were We Not Ready? • Needed the right members on the board • Needed the right staff team - ;) • Needed the right vision & principles www.disabilitydirect.com

  7. Vision • To create an adaptable & sustainable service • To work with anyone & everyone (whenever possible) • To behave like a commercial business www.disabilitydirect.com

  8. Principles • Avoid ‘pointless’ / ‘aimless’ meetings • Leave the CEO to get on with it! • Not to complicate decision-making with red tape • Not to get tangled up in national decisions • Never bite the hand that feeds you! www.disabilitydirect.com

  9. Amo - Became CEO in 1998 • Same Year DD gets DCC funding!!! • Insisted on DCC representation on board www.disabilitydirect.com

  10. Relationships • With members • in 1998 asked them what they want from DD? • With DCC • With local Vol Sector • With Other CILs and Groups www.disabilitydirect.com

  11. Members said… • We want speedy services • We want staff who listen to us rather than bombard us with too much unnecessary info • Majority (70%) wanted DD to act on gaps in services www.disabilitydirect.com

  13. Fast Forward • Over next 6 years DD grew from 4 staff to 15 • In 2004 DD won the contract for a DPSS • Changed the group overnight www.disabilitydirect.com
