  7. Koinonia: the word for fellowship HOW WAS THE WORD koinonia COMMONLY USED?

Koinonia • generally used for having something in common • From Koinos • Means common (ownership, concerns, of little value) “a partner, associate, comrade, companion”“a partaker, sharer,” in any thing koinegreek The New Testament was written in Koine Greek. The word Koine denotes “common,” because this style of Greek was the language of the common man-on-the-street during the time of Christ. • Formed English words like: communion, contribution, communication, communism

  11. Koinonia • Has broad meaning in its original non-religious usage. • Business partners • Luke 5:10 (NASB77) 10 and so also James and John, sons of Zebedee, who were partners with Simon. And Jesus said to Simon, " Do not fear, from now on you will be catching men." • A charitable collection, contribution • 2 Corinthians 9:13 (NASB77) 13 Because of the proof given by this ministry they will glorify God for your obedience to your confession of the gospel of Christ, and for the liberality of your contribution to them and to all, • A participation • 2 Corinthians 8:4 (NASB77) 4 begging us with much entreaty for the favor of participation in the support of the saints,

Koinonia • Originally fellowship in something w/o religious connotation. • Sharing • Hebrews 2:14 (NASB77) 14 Since then the children share in flesh and blood, He Himself likewise also partook of the same, that through death He might render powerless him who had the power of death, that is, the devil; • Joint ownership • Acts 2:44-45 (ESV) 44 And all who believed were together and had all things in common. 45 And they were selling their possessions and belongings and distributing the proceeds to all, as any had need. • The domestic sharing between a husband and wife in 1st century literature.

  13. HOW WAS koinonia MORE SPECIFICALLY USED FOR THOSE IN THE CHURCH?

  14. Koinonia in the church • It was a “special sharing” that virtually encompassed and influenced all aspects of one’s life.

Koinonia in the church • Nothing on earth could compare with the type of fellowship Christ was to bring to those who were in the kingdom. • Nationalism was limited to a fellowship of the nation. • Humanity based unity was often limited to fellowship of race. • Even in God's religion, Israel, there were tribes, not total fellowship. • Pax Romana - Even the fellowship of Rome’s peace was hated by those who were given peace.

Koinonia in the church • Those who became Christians shared in ways they never could have nor would have before. • Galatians 2:9 (NASB77) 9 and recognizing the grace that had been given to me, James and Cephas and John, who were reputed to be pillars, gave to me and Barnabas the right hand of fellowship, that we mightgo to the Gentiles, and they to the circumcised.

  17. WHAT DOES THIS “SPECIAL SHARING” TRULY ENTAIL?

At the point of conversion • Immediate fellowship with God as adopted children • Ephesians 1:5 (NASB77) 5 He predestined us to adoption as sons through Jesus Christ to Himself, according to the kind intention of His will, • 1 John 1:3 (NASB77) 3 what we have seen and heard we proclaim to you also, that you also may have fellowship with us; and indeed our fellowship is with the Father, and with His Son Jesus Christ. • 1 Corinthians 1:9 (NASB77) 9 God is faithful, through whom you were called into fellowship with His Son, Jesus Christ our Lord. • 2 Corinthians 13:14 (NASB77) 14 The grace of the Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God, and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit, be with you all.

  19. At the point of conversion • Immediate fellowship with all God’s adopted • 1 John 1:7 (NASB77) 7 but if we walk in the light as He Himself is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus His Son cleanses us from all sin.

At the beginning • The first church practiced as the Lord prayed • Acts 2:42 (NASB77) 42 And they were continually devoting themselves to the apostles' teaching and to fellowship, to the breaking of bread and to prayer. • Even after persecution began(apostles jailed). • Acts 4:32 (NASB77) 32 And the congregation of those who believed were of one heart and soul; and not one of them claimed that anything belonging to him was his own; but all things were common property to them.

It is a powerful bond… • It breaks down barriers • Racial & Social status • 1 Corinthians 12:12-14 (NASB77) 12 For even as the body is one and yet has many members, and all the members of the body, though they are many, are one body, so also is Christ. 13 For by one Spirit we were all baptized into one body, whether Jews or Greeks, whether slaves or free, and we were all made to drink of one Spirit. 14 For the body is not one member, but many. • 1 Corinthians 16 (NASB77) 26 For consider your calling, brethren, that there were not many wise according to the flesh, not many mighty, not many noble; • Personal history is irrelevant • 1 Corinthians 6:9-11 (NASB77) 9 Or do you not know that the unrighteous shall not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived; neither fornicators, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor effeminate, nor homosexuals, 10 nor thieves, nor the covetous, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor swindlers, shall inherit the kingdom of God. 11 And such were some of you; but you were washed, but you were sanctified, but you were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ, and in the Spirit of our God.

  23. …that defies full comprehension. • It is based on a relationship with The Power more solid, stable, and unique . . . Only for Sons of God - those belonging to Christ • Galatians 3:26-29 (NASB77) 26 For you are all sons of God through faith in Christ Jesus. 27 For all of you who were baptized into Christ have clothed yourselves with Christ. 28 There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither slave nor free man, there is neither male nor female; for you are all one in Christ Jesus. 29 And if you belong to Christ, then you are Abraham's offspring, heirs according to promise.

  28. “one for all, all for one” • 1 Corinthians 12:26-27 (NASB77) 26 And if one member suffers, all the members suffer with it; if one member is honored, all the members rejoice with it. 27 Now you are Christ's body, and individually members of it. • 1 Peter 4:14 (NASB77) 14 If you are reviled for the name of Christ, you are blessed, because the Spirit of glory and of God rests upon you. • Romans 12:15-16 (NASB77) 15 Rejoice with those who rejoice, and weep with those who weep. 16 Be of the same mind toward one another; do not be haughty in mind, but associate with the lowly. Do not be wise in your own estimation.

  29. 1 John 1 A holy calling from Above. • We are recognizing and therefore confidently proclaiming several important factors: • That we are in fellowship with the apostles and with the Father and the Son having believed the testimony of the apostles. • That we are in fellowship with one another since we are in fellowship with Christ. • That we remain in fellowship with God because we are walking with God in the light. • That we are in fellowship because we have our confessed sins being continually cleansed by Christ.

Requires correctly dealing with sin. • In order to have fellowship with God we must avoid the following errors: • We cannot walk in darkness (i.e., habitually live in sin) (1 John 1:6). • We cannot claim that sin has no real significance in our lives (1 John 1:8; cf. Romans 7:14-25). • We cannot assert that we have not sinned (1 John 1:10; cf. Romans 3:23). • It is necessary, therefore, that we properly view ourselves with respect to sin.   31. A holy calling from Above. • An exclusive calling from above! • If someone is in fellowship with Christ we are automatically in fellowship with them. • If someone is NOT in fellowship with Christ we are automatically NOT in fellowship with them. • There is no choice in the matter.

Two scriptural realities… • There is no fellowship with God for “Christians” who walk in spiritual darkness. • 1 John 1:6 (NASB77) 6 If we say that we have fellowship with Him and yet walk in the darkness, we lie and do not practice the truth; • Fellowship “with one another” is restricted to those who “walk in the light”. • 1 John 1:7 (NASB77) 7 but if we walk in the light as He Himself is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus His Son cleanses us from all sin.

Wouldn’t it be wonderful to be a part of a congregation like this: • Acts 2:42-47 (NASB77) 42 And they were continually devoting themselves to the apostles' teaching and to fellowship, to the breaking of bread and to prayer. 43 And everyone kept feeling a sense of awe; and many wonders and signs were taking place through the apostles. 44 And all those who had believed were together, and had all things in common; 45 and they began selling their property and possessions, and were sharing them with all, as anyone might have need. 46 And day by day continuing with one mind in the temple, and breaking bread from house to house, they were taking their meals together with gladness and sincerity of heart, 47 praising God, and having favor with all the people. And the Lord was adding to their number day by day those who were being saved.

  37. Everyday fellowship… • They met daily, not just Sunday and Wednesday. • Acts 2:46 (NASB77) 46 And day by day continuing with one mind in the temple, and breaking bread from house to house, they were taking their meals together with gladness and sincerity of heart, • They searched the scriptures daily, not just in “church” or in “class”. • Acts 17:11 (NASB77) 11 Now these were more noble-minded than those in Thessalonica, for they received the word with great eagerness, examining the Scriptures daily, to see whether these things were so. • They took care of each other daily. • Acts 6:1 (NASB77) 1 Now at this time while the disciples were increasing in number, a complaint arose on the part of the Hellenistic Jews against the native Hebrews, because their widows were being overlooked in the daily serving of food. • They won souls daily. • Acts 2:47 (NASB77) 47 praising God, and having favor with all the people. And the Lord was adding to their number day by day those who were being saved. • The church was growing daily. • Acts 16:5 (NASB77) 5 So the churches were being strengthened in the faith, and were increasing in number daily.

  38. With everyday rejoicing… • Everyday shared gladness, sincerity, and praise to God. • Acts 2:46 (NASB77) 46 And day by day continuing with one mind in the temple, and breaking bread from house to house, they were taking their meals together with gladness and sincerity of heart, 47 praising God, and having favor with all the people. And the Lord was adding to their number day by day those who were being saved. • Everyday rejoicing in personal growth. • 2 Peter 1:5-8 (NASB77) 5 Now for this very reason also, applying all diligence, in your faith supply moral excellence, and in your moral excellence, knowledge; 6 and in your knowledge, self-control, and in your self-control, perseverance, and in your perseverance, godliness; 7 and in your godliness, brotherly kindness, and in your brotherly kindness, love. 8 For if these qualities are yours and are increasing, they render you neither useless nor unfruitful in the true knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ. • Everyday rejoicing in remembrance of having had our sins purged. • 2 Peter 1:9 (NASB77) 9 For he who lacks these qualities is blind or short-sighted, having forgotten his purification from his former sins. • Everyday rejoicing in Gods’ help spiritually and physically. • Psalms 51:12 (NASB77) 12 Restore to me the joy of Thy salvation, And sustain me with a willing spirit. • Matthew 6:11 (NASB77) 11 ' Give us this day our daily bread.

  39. With constant mutual encouragement! • This… • Hebrews 3:13 (ESV) 13 But exhort one another every day, as long as it is called “today,” that none of you may be hardened by the deceitfulness of sin. • Hebrews 10:24 (ESV) 24 And let us consider how to stir up one another to love and good works, • Philemon 1:4-7 (ESV) 4 I thank my God always when I remember you in my prayers, 5 because I hear of your love and of the faith that you have toward the Lord Jesus and for all the saints, 6 and I pray that the sharing of your faith may become effective for the full knowledge of every good thing that is in us for the sake of Christ. 7 For I have derived much joy and comfort from your love, my brother, because the hearts of the saints have been refreshed through you. • Ephesians 4:15 (ESV) 15 Rather, speaking the truth in love, we are to grow up in every way into him who is the head, into Christ, • Not this… • Galatians 5:15 (ESV) 15 But if you bite and devour one another, watch out that you are not consumed by one another.

  40. Persecution Fellowship w Christ • All faithful Christians will share in persecution as evidence of fellowship with Christ. • 2 Timothy 3:12 (ESV) 12 Indeed, all who desire to live a godly life in Christ Jesus will be persecuted,

  41. Persecution Fellowship w Christ • Persecution allows us to share in a special fellowship with our Lord. In his letter to the Philippians, Paul catalogued a number of things he had to forfeit for the cause of Jesus. Such losses, however, he viewed as but “dung” (3:8 – KJV), or “refuse” (ASV), that he might share the “fellowship of [Christ’s] sufferings” (3:10). The noble apostle even counted his “bonds” as a “grace” (favor) which God had bestowed upon him (see Phil. 1:7).   43. The Lord’s Supper – Fellowship • We participate together in memorial and proclamation with the Lord and his followers. • Matthew 26:29 (NASB77) 29 "But I say to you, I will not drink of this fruit of the vine from now on until that day when I drink it new with you in My Father's kingdom."

Koinonia in the Lord’s Supper– • The sharing together of the Lord’s Supper by the individual members of His body is a proclamation of unity by the one body! • Paul’s logic in 1 Corinthians 10:17 (ESV) Because there is one bread, we who are many are one body, for we all partake of the one bread.

  45. Koinonia signified in the Lord’s Supper • 1 Corinthians 10:16-17 (NASB77) 16 Is not the cup of blessing which we bless a sharing in the blood of Christ? Is not the bread which we break a sharing in the body of Christ? 17 Since there is one bread, we who are many are one body; for we all partake of the one bread.

  47. Ramifications of “communion” • The Lord’s Supper should only be given to those who are “in Christ” through baptism for forgiveness of sins. • Fellowship in Christ cannot be extended or denied, nor conducted and practiced, in a manner that is formulated by mere subjective, personal judgment.

Incredible ramifications of fellowship “in Christ” • Partnerships must form, no matter what the former relationship. • Philemon 1:15-17 (NASB77) 15 For perhaps he was for this reason parted from you for a while, that you should have him back forever, 16 no longer as a slave, but more than a slave, a beloved brother, especially to me, but how much more to you, both in (or the flesh and in the Lord. 17 If then you regard me a partner, accept him as you would me. the church in Corinth failed!

Incredible ramifications of fellowship “in Christ” • Partnerships must form, no matter what continuing social, economic, or educational differences exist. • Romans 12:16 (ESV) 16 Live in harmony with one another. Do not be haughty, but associate with the lowly. Never be wise in your own sight. • James 1:9-11 (ESV) 9 Let the lowly brother boast in his exaltation, 10 and the rich in his humiliation, because like a flower of the grass he will pass away. 11 For the sun rises with its scorching heat and withers the grass; its flower falls, and its beauty perishes. So also will the rich man fade away in the midst of his pursuits. • James 2:1 (ESV) 1 My brothers, show no partiality as you hold the faith in our Lord Jesus Christ, the Lord of glory. • 1 Corinthians 1:26 (ESV) 26 For consider your calling, brothers: not many of you were wise according to worldly standards, not many were powerful, not many were of noble birth. the church in Corinth failed!

  50. The church at Corinth: They failed to eat the Lord’s Supper! Why? • 1 Corinthians 11:17-22 (NASB77) 17 But in giving this instruction, I do not praise you, because you come together not for the better but for the worse. 18 For, in the first place, when you come together as a church, I hear that divisions exist among you; and in part, I believe it. 19 For there must also be factions among you, in order that those who are approved may have become evident among you. 20 Therefore when you meet together, it is not to eat the Lord's Supper, 21 for in your eating each one takes his own supper first; and one is hungry and another is drunk. 22 What! Do you not have houses in which to eat and drink? Or do you despise the church of God, and shame those who have nothing? What shall I say to you? Shall I praise you? In this I will not praise you.
