  3. oxygen • A single leaf of a plant can produce up to 5ml of water an hour. • Now think… the average human breathes in about 53 ML of oxygen an Hour… • How many leaves per hour are needed???

  4. Food • How many plants can you think of that are used as food?

  5. Medicine • Willow tree • aspirin Made from the bark • coca Plant • Used as a local anesthetic • Quinine tree • Used to treat malaria • THERE ARE MANY MORE!!!

  6. clothing • Cotton • Used to make most of our clothing • Flax plant • Used to make linen • Tannin • Chemical from trees in order to treat leather

  7. fuels • coal • oil • Natural gas • ALL from stored photosynthetic energy!!! • Developing countries use wood and other plants.

  8. Other uses • How many other uses can you think of that use plants? • You may use pg.552 for help!

  15. Vascular tissue • Carries water and nutrients • Two types • Xylem: from the roots to the stems and leaves • Phloem: from any direction

  16. Two types of vascular plants • Angiosperms • known as Flowering plants • Produce seeds with a protective fruit • Ex. Apple tree • Gymnosperms • Produce seeds not enclosed by fruits • Ex. Pine tree
