Cairn India Ltd – Petrofed Brainstorming Session 17 Oct 2008 Developing academic curricula for Universities to meet petroleum industry's needs - An industry perspective by Dr. Sunil Bharati October 2008
Cairn India Ltd – Petrofed Brainstorming Session 17 Oct 2008 – Sunil Bharati Redefining & redesigning academic curriculum - Background & constraints • Universities & institutes currently teaching “text-book” based & textbook inspired courses • In many cases, text books are outdated while the “world has moved on” • Industry-background people are neither taking courses nor participating in shaping education • Inadequate Research initiatives and lack of quality projects in India • Practically no access to high-quality data and modern technology
Cairn India Ltd – Petrofed Brainstorming Session 17 Oct 2008 – Sunil Bharati Redefining & redesigning academic curriculum – Why do it • Only two Indian universities / institutes figure in world’s top 200 (teaching standards, teaching aids, patents, publications etc) • Industry is a definitive next step on completion of education • Lesser efforts and resources are required to bring new entrants to the mark and make them productive • Industry will always look for the best talent – irrespective where it is available – at home or abroad • Universities’ must establish the reputation of “the best” first at home – a process we think will take 5-8 years
Cairn India Ltd – Petrofed Brainstorming Session 17 Oct 2008 – Sunil Bharati Redefining & redesigning academic curriculum – Way forward • Best example – Entire North Sea has become a huge natural laboratory • Joint Industry Projects (JIP) • Mandatory research funding by industry (% of net profits) with clear accountability and deliverables • Hands-on practicals for students & faculty using industry data and industry field examples • Joint Industry-University committees/commission, which is adequately empowered and mandated • Develop and run selected “Centers of Excellence” – true excellence ! • Clear and well defined KPIs for universities and all umbrella bodies
Cairn India Ltd – Petrofed Brainstorming Session 17 Oct 2008 – Sunil Bharati Redefining & redesigning academic curriculum – Challenges and decisive factors • Industry’s mandate and primary role is not teaching ; its accountability is to the shareholders • Industry’s main limitation is TIME ; University’s main limitation is FUNDS • Universities must pick up the ball and run • Incentives and compensation packages of academic faculty • Paradigm shift in mindset and visible, quick change required • Train the faculty to take that next big lead forward • Benefits and “cost of lost opportunity” must be boldly outlined
