International Walk to School Day and Month • Encourage physical activity by teaching children the skills to walk safely, how to identify safe routes to school, and the benefits of walking • Raise awareness of how walkable a community is and where improvements can be made • Raise concern for the environment • Reduce crime and take back neighborhoods for people on foot • Reduce traffic congestion, pollution, and speed near schools • Share valuable time with local community leaders, parents, and children
America Walks Mission Statement: The mission of America Walks is to make America a great place for walking by working collaboratively to share knowledge, advance policies and implement effective campaigns to promote safe, convenient and accessible walking conditions for all.

Greenfield Walking Group • In October 2006 two Bakersfield mom’s, Gema Perez and Leticia Encima, notice a problem in their community • Created a group to promote healthy living within the Bakersfield community and provide assistance toother communities that want to increase walkability in their area
