  1. Findings from Dyslexia screening research project Dyslexia, dyspraxia and visual stress: how do we identify these in students?

  2. Aim of project • To compare 2 different dyslexia screening methods • Tutor screening : • a battery of tests and interview delivered by a tutor 1 - 1 • Computer screening: computerised assessment – LADS • could be delivered to up to 20 students at a time.

  3. Participants • 100 students recruited: • 99 double screened • 30 screened positive on both screenings • 41 students screened positive on one screening method • 71 students referred for assessment

  4. Screening project: Assessment • Some students previously assessed • Some students refused assessment • 56 assessments carried out + 4 previous ones used in analysis • Of the 60 assessed, 75% (45/60) were found to have a specific difficulty. • Much higher incidence than we expected

  5. Raising awareness of SpLD • research into pupils failing SATS levels (PATOSS Conference 2008) – 55% identified as at risk of dyslexia – so there may be an underlying cause as to why a particular student is failing.

  6. Results of assessments • 39 dyslexic • 18 dyspraxic • 15 visual stress Comorbidity: 13 dyslexia + visual stress 13 dyslexia + dyspraxia 9 dyspraxia + visual stress

  7. Co-morbidity of dyslexia, dyspraxia and visual stress from the 60 assessments used. Assessed negative = 15
