  1. changing the world, one cell at a time Induced Pluripotent Stem (iPS) Cell Training Workshop Stem Cells Ltd and Cell Reprogramming Australia (CRA) are pleased to announce the dates for their upcoming Induced Pluripotent Stem (iPS) Cell Workshop: Wednesday 30th October – Friday 1st November 2013 The StemCore and CRA iPS Cell workshop is aimed at giving participants both practical experience with generation, identification and analysis of iPS cells (practical component); and to provide theoretical background of the fast developing field of iPS cell research (lecture component). These comprehensive training workshops provide hands-on, laboratory-based training, and includes a lecture component from Associate Ernst Wolvetang, one of Australia’s leading stem cell scientists. The workshops deal with derivation of induced pluripotent stem cell lines (iPSC) and their subsequent passaging, manipulation, daily maintenance and characterisation. • Laboratory-based training modules available include: • Reprogramming of adult fibroblasts to generate iPS cells • Identification of putative iPS cells • Selection and expansion of putative iPS cells • Passaging of iPS cells • Cryopreservation iPS cells • Characterisation of iPS cells • Supplementary seminar modules: • The underlying biology of reprogramming • Properties of iPS cells • iPS cells as disease models • Epigenetics and reprogramming These intensive training workshops are conducted under the guidance of expert stem cell researcher, Associate Professor Ernst Wolvetang, AIBN Group Leader and President of Cell Reprogramming Australia, in our state-of-the-art laboratories at the StemCore Facility.   2. Profile: Assoc Professor Wolvetang received his PhD in 1992 from the Department of Biochemistry, University of Amsterdam. He undertook postdoctoral studies at the Department of Biochemistry, Institute for Reproduction and Development and Centre for Early Human Development of Monash University, investigating apoptosis, Down syndrome and ETS transcription factors, respectively. He then joined Prof Martin Pera at the Australian Stem Cell Centre in 2003 to pioneer human embryonic stem cell research in Australia. He became Group leader of the Basic human stem cell biology laboratory at the ASCC research laboratory and Senior Lecturer in the Department of Anatomy and Cell biology in 2006, until he accepted his current position as an independent group leader at the AIBN and Associate Professor in stem cell biology at the University of Queensland in 2008. He has been instrumental in enabling induced pluripotent stem cell research across Australia, was leader of the “Reprogramming and Induction of Pluripotency” Collaborative Stream of the Australian Stem Cell Centre until the end of that initiative in  2011. He subsequently initiated and became the inaugural president of Cell Reprogramming Australia, a collaborative framework aiming to facilitate and accelerate iPS cell research in Australia and the Asia pacific region.  He has further established a core facility within the AIBN for the generation of induced pluripotent stem cells and organizes highly successful workshops for training of national and international iPS cell researchers. It is a not-for-profit organization. It has been recognized that, while there are a number of organizations with a strong stem cell emphasis in Australia, no umbrella organization directly provides a voice for this new and exciting field. This idea was born following the successful collaboration of eight laboratories within the ASCC framework before it closed on 30 June 2011. At its last meeting, the importance of continuing collaboration was identified, particularly in light of the large collaborative iPS/reprogramming programs that have already been set up overseas. These have created active collaboration of laboratories that share a common vision in this area, and have subsequently driven innovative science, fostered joint funding applications and provided a framework for enabling clinical and commercial translation of iPS cells. CRA therefore believes it is important that all scientists with an interest in iPS/reprogramming i.e. stem cell scientists, clinicians, engineers etc. be part of this network.
