  6. forty-niner A person who went to California in 1849 to search for gold.

  7. gold rush A huge movement of people trying to find gold.

  8. isthmus A narrow piece of land that connects two larger land areas.

  9. swamp A low, wet area, usually covered by shallow water.

  10. territory A place owned and governed by a country.

  11. Lesson Two: Good Times and Bad Times

  12. consumer A person who buys a product or a service.

  13. discrimination The unfair treatment of people because of such things as their religion, their race, or their birthplace.

  14. entrepreneur A person who sets up a new business.

  15. 1. Fred De Luca In 1965 Fred De Luca borrowed just $1,000 to start the now-famous Subway sandwich restaurant. Fred was only 17 years old when he decided to be an entrepreneur, and he started the restaurant as a way to earn money for college. Since opening the first shop in Boston, the chain now has 32,401 locations and makes over $9 billion in sales yearly. free enterprise A kind of economy in which people can own and run their own businesses.
