  2. Early Life • Birth name: McKinley Morganfield • Born in Rolling Fork, Mississippi • Lost his mother at the age of 3; raised by his grandmother • Muddy Waters (nickname) given during childhood

Early Influences • Began playing harmonica at the age of 13; 4 years later he took up the guitar • Major influences were Son House and Robert Johnson • Style was classified as Delta Blues • Characterized by bottleneck style and the jagged, pulsating rhythms • Lyrics were dark, harsh, expressive, told of real life • Singers sang in a pain-filled manner

  4. Transitioning • Moved to Chicago in 1943 • Worked as a truck driver while trying to make it as a musician • His song “I can’t be satisfied” launched the Chicago blues scene

  5. His place in history… • Ranked #17 on Rolling Stone’s list of Greatest artists of all time • His song “Rollin’ Stone” inspired the name for The Rolling Stones • Inspiration for: Buddy Guy, Magic Sam, Otis Rush, and many more • Why was he important?? • Helped bring blues out of the farm house and into the clubs and onto the radio • Moved the Delta blues style out of Mississippi • Began Chicago blues • Inspired the British beat explosion of the 60’s
