  1. The Sin of a Judgmental Spirit Matthew 7:1-6

  2. Matthew 7:1-6 1"Do not judge, so that you won’t be judged.2For with the judgment you use, you will be judged, and with the measure you use, it will be measured to you.3Why do you look at the speck in your brother’s eye but don’t notice the log in your own eye?4Or how can you say to your brother, ‘Let me take the speck out of your eye,’ and look, there’s a log in your eye? 5Hypocrite! First take the log out of your eye, and then you will see clearly to take the speck out of your brother’s eye. 6Don’t give what is holy to dogs or toss your pearls before pigs, or they will trample them with their feet, turn, and tear you to pieces.

  3. Appropriate times to judge… • We must confront public sin in the church. Matthew 18:15-17 15"If your brother sins against you, go and rebuke him in private. If he listens to you, you have won your brother. 16But if he won’t listen, take one or two more with you, so that by the testimonyof two or three witnesses every fact may be established. 17If he pays no attention to them, tell the church. But if he doesn’t pay attention even to the church, let him be like an unbelieverand a tax collector to you.

  4. Appropriate times to judge… • We must have a discerning spirit regarding teaching. Galatians 1:6-9 6I am amazed that you are so quickly turning away from Him who called you by the grace of Christ, ‹and are turning› to a different gospel— 7not that there is another ‹gospel›,but there are some who are troubling you and want to change the gospel of Christ. 8But even if we or an angelfrom heaven should preach to you a gospel other than what we have preached to you, a curse be on him! 9As we have said before, I now say again: if anyone preaches to you a gospel contrary to what you received, a curse be on him!

  5. Appropriate times to judge… • We must preach the truth of scripture, including sin. • We must discern when it’s time to walk away.

  6. 1. We must have a proper view of God

  7. 2. We must have a proper view of others

  8. 3. We must have a proper view of ourselves

  9. Luke 18:9-14 9He also told this parable to some who trusted in themselves that they were righteousand looked down on everyone else: 10"Two men went up to the temple complex to pray, one a Pharisee and the other a tax collector. 11The Pharisee took his stand and was praying like this: ‘God, I thank You that I’m not like other people—greedy, unrighteous, adulterers, or even like this tax collector. 12I fast twice a week; I give a tenth of everything I get.’ 13"But the tax collector, standing far off, would not even raise his eyes to heaven but kept striking his chest and saying, ‘God, turn Your wrath from me—a sinner!’ 14I tell you, this one went down to his house justified rather than the other; because everyone who exalts himself will be humbled, but the one who humbles himself will be exalted."

  10. Galatians 6:1 1Brothers, if someone is caught in any wrongdoing, you who are spiritual should restore such a person with a gentle spirit, watching out for yourselves so you won’t be tempted also. 2Carry one another’s burdens; in this way you will fulfill the law of Christ.
