  1. Understanding Man’s Unique Creation Is the Key To Understanding LifeWm F. Stapleton What Is Man?

  2. What Must Man Be?Psalm 8:1-9 1 To the Chief Musician. On the instrument of Gath. A Psalm of David. O LORD, our Lord, How excellent is Your name in all the earth, Who have set Your glory above the heavens! 2 Out of the mouth of babes and nursing infants You have ordained strength, Because of Your enemies, That You may silence the enemy and the avenger. 3 When I consider Your heavens, the work of Your fingers, The moon and the stars, which You have ordained, 4 What is man that You are mindful of him, And the son of man that You visit him? 5 For You have made him a little lower than the angels, And You have crowned him with glory and honor. 6 You have made him to have dominionover the works of Your hands; You have put all things under his feet, 7All sheep and oxen -- Even the beasts of the field, 8 The birds of the air, And the fish of the sea That pass through the paths of the seas. 9 O LORD, our Lord, How excellent is Your name in all the earth!

  3. We May Think of Man as the Crown of God‘s Creation, or as the Great Spoiler of all that God Created. But man, like his creator, is most properly understood as a Relationship. Now may the God of Peace Himself sanctify you completely, and may your wholespirit, soul and bodybe preserved blameless at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ.           1Thessalonians 5:23 NKJV

  7. What Is The “Soul” of Man? Man’s soul was not “created” (Barah) as such, neither was it “made” (Yatsar). It came into being as a result of the infusing of the spirit into the body. • The Spirit is Created: Genesis 1:27 Bara • The Body is Made: Genesis 2:7 Yatsar • Breathing, or infusing the Spirit into the Body causes the synthesis of a third independant entity, which is the Soul. • Ruach (Heb) n Breath, Wind, Spirit v To breathe out or blow • Pneuma (Gr) n Breath, Wind, Spirit v To Operate by Breath, Wind or Spirit

  8. What Is The “Soul” of Man? • Man‘s eternal spirit was created for relationship in heaven with the Father. It belongs to eternity. • Man‘s temporal body was formed of earthly elements to relate to creation. It belongs to the Earth, it is part of this creation. • Man‘s soul exists only because the spirit lives in the body. It belongs only to the integrated whole of Spirit and Body, and exists only so long as the integrated whole persists.

  9. What Is The “Soul” of Man? • The soul is the nexus of spirit and body, where the thinking, choosing and feeling aspects of man exists. • Although it also involves aspects of the spirit and the body, the individual, knowable personality is seated in the soul. • The soul is the seedbed for both kinds of relationship, spiritual and physical, and is the present-tense reality of man’s life in this world.

  10. obody knows how long Adam and Eve lived in the garden in their perfectly integrated state, but we do know that they eventually chose to disobey God’s instructions regarding the forbidden fruit of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil. This one sin, we are taught, brought about “death,” in all creation, the fracturing of the harmony in which God had so carefully planned and created all that existed. Sin has not changed at all since that time. It still brings death. And it still separates man from his loving creator. And the temptations are still the same for us today as they were for Eve in the garden. N The Broken Bridge

  11. The Three Troubles 6 So when the woman saw that the tree was good for food, that it was pleasant to the eyes, and a tree desirable to make one wise, she took of its fruit and ate. She also gave to her husband with her, and he ate. 7 Then the eyes of both of them were opened, and they knew that they were naked; and they sewed fig leaves together and made themselves coverings. 8 And they heard the sound of the LORD God walking in the garden in the cool of the day, and Adam and his wife hid themselves from the presence of the LORD God among the trees of the garden. Genesis 3:6-8 (NKJV) 15 Do not love the world or the things in the world. If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him. 16 For all that [is] in the world -- the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life -- is not of the Father but is of the world. 1 John 2:15-16 (NKJV)

  13. TheWorld What the Bible means when it speaks of “The World” • The information, experiences and interpretations of events imposed by the fallen systems of human society. • The physical influence of the fallen and corrupted creation. • 9We know that we are of God, and the whole world lies under the sway of the wicked one. 1John 5:19(NKJV) • 16 For all that [is] in the world -- the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life-- is not of the Father but is of the world. 17And the world is passing away, and the lust of it; but he who does the will of God abides forever. • 1John 2:16-17 (NKJV)

  17. TheDevil What The Bible Means When It Speaks Of“The Devil” • Often, “the devil” refers not only to the person of Satan, but to the activity and operation of his evil organization. The realm of spirits is inhabited by disobedient & deceiving spirits fallen from heaven when Lucifer fell. • They seek to influence people and their organizations and societies for evil. • They are able to inflict disease, Luke 13:11; 2 Corinthians 12:7-10; influence the mind, 2 Corinthians 4:4; 11:3; James 3:15; and deceive people, Ephesians 2:2 • Their goal is destruction of individual personalities. • Satan, the fallen angel and perverter of God’s creation.

  19. Hearing by Faith, the Operation of the Gospel 6 But the righteousness based on faith says, Do not say in your heart, Who will ascend into heaven? (that is, to bring Christ down) 7 or Who will descend into the abyss? (that is, to bring Christ up from the dead). 8 But what does it say? The word is near you, in your mouth and in your heart (that is, the word of faith that we proclaim); 9 because, if you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. 10 For with the heart one believes and is justified, and with the mouth one confesses and is saved. 11 For the Scripture says, Everyone who believes in him will not be put to shame.12 For there is no distinction between Jew and Greek; the same Lord is Lord of all, bestowing his riches on all who call on him. 13 For everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.14 But how are they to call on him in whom they have not believed? And how are they to believe in him of whom they have never heard? And how are they to hear without someone preaching? 15 And how are they to preach unless they are sent? As it is written, How beautiful are the feet of those who preach the good news! 16 But they have not all obeyed the gospel. For Isaiah says, Lord, who has believed what he has heard from us? 17 So faith comes from hearing, and hearing through the word of Christ.         Romans 10:6-18 20

  20. Salvation In Three Tenses 1There was a man of the Pharisees named Nicodemus, a ruler of the Jews. 2This man came to Jesus by night and said to Him, "Rabbi, we know that You are a teacher come from God; for no one can do these signs thatYou do unless God is with him." 3 Jesus answered and said to him, "Most assuredly, I say to you, unless one is born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God." 4 Nicodemus said to Him, "How can a man be born when he is old? Can he enter a second time into his mother's womb and be born?" 5 Jesus answered, "Most assuredly, I say to you, unless one is born of water and the Spirit, he cannot enter the kingdom of God. 6 "That which is born of the flesh is flesh, and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit. 7 "Do not marvel that I said to you, 'You must be born again.' 8 "The wind blows where it wishes, and you hear the sound of it, but cannot tell where it comes from and where it goes. So is everyone who is born of the Spirit." 9 Nicodemus answered and said to Him, "How can these things be?" 10 Jesus answered and said to him, "Are you the teacher of Israel, and do not know these things? John 3:1-10 (NKJV)

  21. Salvation In Three Tenses 51Behold! I tell you a mystery. We shall not all sleep, but we shall all be changed, 52 in a moment, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trumpet. For the trumpet will sound, and the dead will be raised imperishable, and we shall be changed. 53 For this perishable body must put on the imperishable, and this mortal body must put on immortality. 54 When the perishable puts on the imperishable, and the mortal puts on immortality, then shall come to pass the saying that is written: Death is swallowed up in victory. 55 O death, where is your victory? O death, where is your sting? 56 The sting of death is sin, and the power of sin is the law. 57 But thanks be to God, who gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ. 58 Therefore, my beloved brothers, be steadfast, immovable, always abounding in the work of the Lord, knowing that in the Lord your labor is not in vain. 1 Corinthians 15:51-58 22

  22. Salvation In Three Tenses Therefore lay aside all filthiness and overflow of wickedness, and receive with meekness the implanted word, which is able to save your souls.*James 1:21 NKJV Question: If James is writing to believers (cf 1:1) why does he say they must receive the implanted word in order to have their souls saved? Are they not saved already? Do they need to be saved again?

  23. 24. Soulish Control vs Intentional Spirituality 16 But I say, walk by the Spirit, and you will not fulfill the lust of the flesh. 17 For the flesh lusts against the Spirit, and the Spirit against the flesh; and these are contrary to one another, that you may not do the things that you desire. 18 But if you are led by the Spirit, you are not under the law. 19 Now the works of the flesh are obvious, which are: adultery, sexual immorality, uncleanness, lustfulness, 20 idolatry, sorcery, hatred, strife, jealousies, outbursts of anger, rivalries, divisions, heresies, 21 envyings, murders, drunkenness, orgies, and things like these; of which I forewarn you, even as I also forewarned you, that thosewho practice such things will not inherit the Kingdom of God. 22 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faith, 23 gentleness, and self-control. Against such things there is no law. 24 Those who belong to Christ have crucified the flesh with its passions and lusts. 25 If we live by the Spirit, let’s also walk by the Spirit. Galatians 5:16-25 Note the carefully crafted order in Paul’s instruction: 1. “Walk by the Spirit,” and 2. “You will not fulfill the lust of the flesh.”

  25. Walking By The Spirit Simply put, Walking by the Spirit entails allowing the regenerate human spirit, under the control of the Holy Spirit, to take precedence over the usual, habitual soulish actions, responses and behaviors. • Intentionally appropriating intuitive knowledge, gained from personal fellowship with God through His Word, to take precedence in the intellect. This must be practiced, it doesn’t occur ‘automagically.’ • Intentionally following the wisdom of scripture, as well as the wisdom gained from personal fellowship with God, to take precedence over the old soulish method of decision making. • Allowing time in fellowship with God to learn to ‘hear’ His love whispers, as well as learning and believing the scriptural message of His love, allowing it to hold sway over your emotions. 26
